Leo has an abscess deep in his ear

Hi everyone,
After two vet visits and some very worrisome days nursing a very sick dog, it has been determined that Leo has been suffering from an abscess deep inside his ear canal. The vet had put him under anesthesia this morning to do a more thorough examination, and thus discovered the abscess. Abscess has been ruptured and flushed out as best they could. His ear drum is also ruptured, but that isn't too much cause for concern. Vet says this is the first time he's ever seen something like this in his 15 years of practice. Anyone had similar experience? Any advice, tips? Anyone ideas on what could have caused this?

Leo will come home today with some pain meds and antibiotics, but does anyone have any further tips to ensure this thing heals up properly? Since we can't see it and can't get at it without anesthetizing him, its worrisome to me. I want to make sure we get it cleared up properly!

Thanks in advance for your advice! As always, attached are some pictures of our handsome hound.

Sorry I can be of no help, just wanted to say,he certainly is a beautiful dog.
Hopefully the meds will clear up his problem.
I can understand your worry, since you cannot see the abscess and you don't know if it is getting better or not.

Aw, poor Leo!! Well, with luck the vet got it cleaned out well enough and the antibiotics will finish up the job! Did the vet give you any tips on what to watch for or a special procedure to follow?

Give Leo a big smooshy hug for me, k? He's such a sweetie!!!
