how to keep your animal in and others (& kids) out

trying to keep animals out of your yard & yours in?
I knew from the first jump that a fence would never do unless it was 10' tall!

I planted a rugoso rose hedge ... it is the type of rose that has incredible, annoying thorns, hairlike, on the stem. Grows over 2 feet a year & it will mature at 5' tall with a 4 to 5' spread, (we planted 3 feet apart). They grow just about anywhere! If you choose to prune them you better be wearing a pair of fish scaling gloves! Animals hate them! and they are very inexpensive.

I put it up more to keep out wandering toddlers. I don't want an accident with my over excitable, gotta jump & lick ya pooch.

So far so good! My dog, who loves to eat trees, will not go near it.

It has turned out to be a very low cost investment, looks great and is a living barrier between thee and me.

It has saved us a lot of stress

How beautiful!! and a great idea, I have been looking for a way to keep the rabbits out (although I love them, the neighbors dog tries to kill them ).
I wonder if I can find them here in Ontario? (I can't recall ever seeing them before).

A good idea, but I think I'll abstain... I'm the type of person who knows the bush is there, but I'll still fall in it anyway.

You should most definately be able to get those roses in Ontario - not sure what part of the prov. you live in, but you could check with Sheridan or White Rose nurseries ... however, they would probably be less expensive at your local outdoor garden setup (like Canadian Tire, Walmart etc.)
They grow just about anywhere (I had great luck with one I threw in the ground in Calgary too, where next to nothing survives the changing weather)

They are lovely. I have fond memories of them planted along the shorelines in Maine. They love sandy soil and are extremely hardy. Very nasty if you tumble in them as I did many a time as a child!

This brought back memories! While on a visit to my parents, my younger, teen-aged brother took me to a party. There was dancing on the wood decking and I had been drinking wine and enjoying dancing as my hubby doesn't like to dance. Yup, I fell off the deck right into a rose bush! If it's there, it'll just reach out to grab me! Wasn't the wine! Wasn't!
