Dog biting and hair loss
My dog has been biting and nawing at his back right above his tail and this has caused hair loss. Does anyone know why he is doing this and is there anything that I can use to get him to stop and make the hair grow back.

Jeepers Creepers can be a number of things
Where do u live, do you have central heat on now cause of the cold? Can be allergic response, flea allergy, anxiety, dry skin anything. Try some cod liver oil capsuls BUT check the area thoroughly and look for flea dirt and small bite marks.

The most common reason for this is flea allergy. You may not even see fleas, in very allergic dogs a single bite can start them itching horribly. Treating the dog (not with over the counter stuff, get one of the prescription ones from the vet) and keeping your home free of fleas will take care of the problem. If he's chewing himself raw, your vet may give a steroid shot to stop the cycle.
I adopted a dog once who had awful flea allergies. She not only chewed big bloody sores on her butt, her teeth were worn down flat from all the chewing when I got her. So I know a bit about this! And your poor dog is probably quite miserable, so hopefully you can make him feel better soon.

your dog might be allergic to the food your feeding him/her.
that happened to my dog, it turned out that he was allergic to something (ingreidents) in the dog food. Check w/your vet. If they do a scrap on his/her ears and find nothing, then it's most likely that it is the dog food. You will need to try a different brand. |

I could be wrong, but I think that this could also be a symptom of diabetes in dogs. Might be a long shot, but something else to check into.
Please, don't anyone shoot me if I am wrong!

Thanks for all the information. We live in South Carolina and do have the heat on. I haven't seen any fleas on Patches for a while so I have been slack about the flea treatments. I have been bathing him in a medicated shampoo, after his bath last night I did see one flea on him so put on some frontline and hope that will work. Will watch for a couple days, if that doesn't help a guess a trip to the vet is in order.
Thanks. |
