How to get urine smell out of carpet
Hey guys,
Might be a pretty common question but does anybody have any great ideas for getting the smell of dog urine out of our carpet. Dash has had some accidents recently and we've had to keep him isolated in the part of the house that has tile floors instead of carpet. Even though we got the stains out, none of the "odor remover" products we have tried seem to work. When my face is near the carpet, I can smell urine and I can't stand it. We've heard many times vinegar is good but I can't imagine dumping it onto my carpet. Thoughts/ideas? Thanks! |

Are you using an enzymatic cleaner? Theoretically the enzymes will neutralize the urine odor. If there's a pad under the carpet, you have to make sure to use enough enzymatic cleaner to soak the pad, as well. We use Simple Solution and for stubborn odors it suggests soaking the carpet and pad at that spot and allowing it to air dry. When dry, the odor is gone but there's a slight residue that I wipe off the surface with a damp paper towel. It's always worked really well for us, though I can't say that I like the odor of the Simple Solution much better than the urine odor. At least the SS scent dissipates with time, though.
I know a lot of members have had luck with the homemade recipe and technique luckypenny mentions here: Quote:

good question!
I recently posted about floor cleaners and their possible dangers to pet health... I read that enzyme cleaners can be dangerous to pets as well as ''phenol based products''.
I see that some of you recommend an enzyme cleaner...what's the risks, if any of using this product? Since a few weeks, I only use vinegar and water to clean the floors and litter boxes and it works well, it also gets rid of the urine smells. Anyone to enlighten me/us about enzyme cleaners? sandyrivers

Hmmmm....good question, sandyrivers. I've not seen anything to indicate that they're toxic. Not sure about cats, but we've used it around our dogs (from puppyhood on up) as needed for decades and never had a problem. I've had less luck eliminating odors with homemade remedies than with the enzymatic cleaners, so I've always stuck with them...

I've never heard anything about enzymatic cleaners being toxic to cats. In fact, they're usually touted for their non-toxic properties. I wonder if this is an urban myth related to email spam that Febreze (which utilizes enzymes) is supposedly harmful to pets: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/febreze.asp
