Is it possible for a dog to go in heat woithout bleeding?

Belle was spayed today and the vet just called and said that she was in heat so they had to charge an extra $50 for the spay. Is this possible? She has not bled at all, and gave us no indication that she was in heat. Its all done and over so I have to pay, but did I get ripped off??? (They did mention the extra $50 if she was in heat before hand)
Thanks

p.s. shes doing great and blood work came back normal!!!

glad she is ok

Glad she came through her spaying well! It's very possible she was in heat and you saw no signs. Some have the tiniest of little pin drops of blood during heat and are very fastidious about keeping clean.

Which would explain why she was licking herself more then usual these last few days.

Thanks! This is quite the hefty bill now!

Yes, they can definitely have 'silent' heats...
She may also just be very good at keeping herself clean.

Some vets also consider them in heat a couple weeks before you see any spotting, and up to 12 weeks after.
