Dog not eating, with tonnes of discharge from eyes
Help! My 10 1/2 year old rotti will not eat his food, and has a large amount of thick yellowish discharge coming from both eyes. He will eat wet food and treats, but not his regular food, even with gravy on it! He has lost so much weight and muscle tone lately, and my husband thinks the time has come to put him down. If anyone knows anything that this might be, please help!!! Thank you so much in advance....

If he's been losing weight and muscle tone I'm assuming you've seen the vet about it.
The loss of appetite and discharge from his eyes would require another visit. You should call your vet today. |

Please take him to the vet...or call your vet...but your dog needs to drink. He can't become dehydrated. Please see a vet.

He's definitely drinking lots, and like I said eating wet food is not a problem. My vet said the loss of muscle tone and some of the weight is due to decreased activity level in an older dog. It's the discharge from BOTH eyes and the turn around in eating habits that concerns me. Thank you very much....

Actually, a friend of mine recommended this site as a great source of info. I must be mistaken, I thought she told me that occasionally vets do in fact answer some of the questions...Sorry!

The vets answer some common questions, but they are certainly not here all the time. It's best to see your vet for concerns anyway as diagnosing over the internet without seeing the dog and knowing any history is very hard to do accurately.

Yes, there are vets here who answer general questions. They could give you guesses on what this could be, but would end by telling you your dog needs to be examined.
A 10 year old dog who is not eating, losing weight and is sick could have something as serious as cancer and only your vet can tell you that by testing. This way you'll know if your dog is suffering something incurable and needs to be euthanized. If you were losing weight, had thick discharge coming from your eyes and couldn't eat, would you see a doctor, or ask for opinions on a message board? |

I absolutely agree, and was by no means looking for an internet diagnosis. Simply some help, and maybe someone who had a similar problem and came through it ok. I appreciate the concern, but it's magnified a milllion times as it is our family dog. Again, thank you, but I see that this site is not what I was led to believe. Thank you all very much though!

You mentioned your rotti is drinking a lot; my Abby (poodle cross) started drinking excessively; making mistakes in the house and losing weight; took her to the vet; they did bloodwork and urinalysis and advised she was diabetic (not saying your rotti is diabetic, but bloodwork will tell at lot of things to the vet.
Hope this helps a little. Rene |

There is no reputable site or board where anyone would try and tell you what's wrong with your dog. Even if they take guesses, how would that help your dog? You still have to take your dog to the vet for diagnosis and treatment and I don't understand why you haven't done so since you indicate that you love him very much?
Your dog may have something that is fixable and while you wait for guesses it pass into a more serious stage. There are veterinary sites where questions are answered, but ONLY when the problem has already been diagnosed. And that site says: Quote:

I was looking around and found this bit on eye discharge and the symptoms of an infection... It does say dogs with yellow discharge and that larger dogs with symptoms should visit a vet
http://home.ivillage.com/pets/symsolve/0,,j8qm,00.html I also checked a little bit about how old rottweilers get to be, and ten and a half is older for this breed, maybe he's switched to soft food because it's easier on his teeth. I was pretty sure I read that you talked to your vet, maybe you could bring him in just to make sure he's comfortable, and medicine to treat the eyes if neccesary. Dogs can live well past the generally acknowledged lifespan estimates, so just making sure that they are comfortable and well (-hmm, like not sick), is what you can do. Even though dogs and humans are getting sicker more often because of the things we allow into our bodies, (toxins), we have been living longer lives because of all of the advances in medicine both for humans and animals. So, I wouldn't give up yet, let the vet decide how comfortable he is, then make a decision as a family. |

Bioandindysmom--please don't be discouraged. Since the internet doesn't allow us to convey tone of voice you can't hear that there is concern for both your doggie and you.
And it sounds as though you are a responsible pet owner who cares for her dog. As I understand it you are looking for some encouragement. Something along the lines of "this happened to my pup and it was from a cold, treated easily." Something like that to calm your fears while you wait for word from the doctor. We all jumped on the get to the vet bandwagon of course as I'm sure you can understand because not everyone is as conscientious about their pets as they should be. So, while a vet may or may not answer your question you can still get some great advice here and the expertise of some wonderful experienced pet owners. I hope you'll stick around and I wish you all the best with your dog. |
