Poop in the same spot, darnit!!!
Okay, this may seem like a dumb question but I've got to ask....
Do your dogs poop in the same spot in the yard (if you have one)? I'm guessing not if what Yukon does is normal... marking territory, whatever you wanna call it, it's dog poop from one end of the yard to the other and all around! We have a fairly large fenced yard and hunting for poop is not a fun game... he used to go in one area but not anymore and after making a straight line of piles along the whole perimeter of the yard, now he just goes anywhere. We try to keep up with it, but one or two seems harder to find than 10! And with the weather being so cold, who wants to be searching the yard in snow and picking up frozen poop?! My husband said he heard of this thing... I have no clue what it's called, but it's some sort of stake you put in the yard and the dog will always go next to it, I guess it has a scent on it... I don't know. Anyone hear of this or use one? |

Lol poor Sneaky Sorry, I can't help, never heard of that stick thing. Herc has always done #2 in one specific area so it is pretty easy to clean up after him. Once in a while he changes his area, but then he will stick to that area.
Man what a life... it is 12:18 am, I have to get up in the morning for work, and I am writing about dog poop. |

could try this
"Keep an important idea in mind: don't focus your effort on teaching
your dog not to go potty in the house... teach your dog to go potty outside. Do you see the difference between those two strategies? One is trying to convince the dog to NOT do something, the other is training a dog to want to do something. There's a big difference. Pick out a good spot outside, preferably a small lawn area. Take your dog on a leash to this same spot every time. The smell of the urine from her previous efforts will encourage her to go again. Ever notice that they sniff for a good spot? Well, guess what smell they are hoping to find! Do not clean up old poop at this spot until the dog is completely potty trained. Teach your puppy words for elimination. "Go Potty", "Go Poop", "Do Your Business", "Let's Get Crapping, Baby!" (Well, OK, maybe that last one wasn't so good.) SOURCE: http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=364676 . |

Mine two poop in two general areas, but yes I have to hunt around for it. I have a friend whose dogs always go in the same place, because when she first had them they lived in a condo & had to go out on leash. Now even though they have a big yard, they go in one corner. I don't really mind poop-hunting. I get extra exercise that way.

Bear is wierd. He will NOT poop in public, nor in front of women (even if he thinks you might be watching him through a window). He does not poop on walks, or off lead. Only at home. It's everywhere. We tried training him when he was a puppy to go in one place, but we also lived on 5 acres, so one never knew where he went.
It's not too bad in the winter as a nice layer of snow will cover the last bit of poops, but do I ever dread the spring melt!

We haven't been teaching Daisy to go in one spot (don't even ask about that argument), but now that we have a baby on the way, we finally agree that it would be a good idea. Any ideas? I'm wondering if it is too late with us being in our house for a year and her being 4.

When I got my dog, I took her on leash to the edge of my property and that's where she prefers to go. But sometimes she goes elsewhere. I know of no way to make a dog go in a certain spot if he's loose and free to choose. Dogs usually like a fresh clean spot to go. At least mine does. You need to take Yukon on a leash to the spot where you want him to go, use some key word like "Hurry up" and praise profusely when he goes. |

Something to try
I built a little corner using a piece of galvanized fencing and rebar. I just fenced off a shady corner where nothing grew anyways and dumped some pea gravel and larger gravel in it. It's called "Your bathroom" to the dogs When it gets too smelly, I hose it down with some mild beach and water mix, then rinse it off with lots of clear water. For the most part, the dogs use it only, of course it took time to get them used to it and they still sneak in the odd pile elsewhere. It helps with the pee killing the lawn too, not near as many brown spots.
The spring thing happens here in calgary TOO often with those wonderful chinooks.. |

Thanks guys! So glad I have something to look forward to in the spring!
I found the stake I was talking about... but it's a pee post, not effective with pooping, but he normally poops right next to where he pees so it may work after all. |

Cool! Doggy urinal! Where did you find it?
I was thinking of teaching Daisy to read, then leaving a pile of doggy magazines in one spot, but I wasn't sure if that would only work for boy dogs...

It's on a few pet store websites too, but this one is half the price ($6.75) of the others. Magazines would probably work for either gender... they'd prolly just chew it to shreds anyway.... |
