2 boxer pups in 1 crate
Sadie & Diesel are now 9 weeks old. Hard to believe we have only had them just over a week now. We have 2 crates and we want them for housetraining as well as when we leave for an extended period of time. Since they have been home Diesel has adjusted well. He goes to sleep and stays asleep all night long which I guess is huge since he is so little. Sadie is a huge whiney suck! She sleeps but wakes up every few hours and we take her out and then she cries for over 30 mins before the cycle repeats. I get that that is normal for puppies but it is hard when Diesel is the model puppy and she is always sad.
This morning I woke up at 7am! I had not heard a peep from either puppy all night long. When I went to get them out of the crates I realized that my husband had put them in the same crate. I am assuming Sadie was happy to snuggle her brother but now I am wondering if this is a good idea or what? They eat apart, pee apart and so far they sleep apart so I figured if it was just at night it wouldn't be such a big deal. Our goal when they are older is to have them sleep on a doggy bed in our room or their crates (if that is where they want to be) with the doors open. My question is, is having them sleep in the same crate now a good idea or are we setting ourselves up for issues in the future? TIA |

I don't see a problem with them together in the crate at night. A good night sleep is great at this age. Someone with more knowledge might think different but I don't see an issue. They are related, they may fight for rank at some time, maybe? If your doing other things separate that might be good. Have fun, your in for some work having two pups. Pics would be great.

What a pair of cuddlebums!!!! Two puppies at the same time can be a handful, but so much fun at the same time! Just grab your patience with both hands and hang on, though, cuz they're gonna do their best to make you lose it!

OMD,are they ever cute
I don't know much about crating.but if these two babies find comfort in sleeping together,to me,it would be a good thing. After all, they are just babies

Pups in a Crate
My sister has a full blooded female boxer (age 3) and a lab/pit mix male (age 2). I have a dauschand full blooded male almost 2 years old. My sister puts all three dogs in a crate when we leave. If not they get crazy and pee in the back room. Plus Tyson the lab and Brodie the wiener dog will bark if seperated from each other. Zoe the boxer seems to like to cuddle with the other two. It's cute the big dogs lay cuddling on the bottom and Brodie lays on top of them. Dogs in packs (wild) will sleep with their packs its what they do so they feel more as a family when together.

Those pictures are adorable .
I really wouldn't recommend crating them together. As litter mates they are going to be super bonded already and you will need to work to have them comfortable without having the other around. There will be lots of times in their lives that they will need to be seperate so they will need to learn how to handle that. Crating seperately is an excellent first step to that. Perhaps the one that was whining is cold? Maybe a sweater on her would make her sleep better. Another option would be to have the two crates facing each other very close so they can see each other. You could then gradually move them back or side by side as they mature.

Thanks all
She sleeps fine without him all day long. They sleep in front of the fireplace and the crates are side by side. We also have a blanket over both crates to keep the warmth in. My husband put them together again last night and I had to wake them up at 7 this morning! I am not going to lie...I am loving the sleep and not listening to her. She doesn't just bark she freaks and it sounds like she is being tortured! I was hoping that them pottying, napping, eating and playing separate was enough and night could be where they sleep together. She just seems to do so much better. Even now she is asleep in her crate and diesel is up with hubby. Is that not enough time apart or is night more of a priority? I do want to do what is best for them of course and if that means back to her freaking nightly and no sleep then I am ok with that. ETA: On another note...when they are older and no longer need to be locked in at night how does that work? I see them sleeping just where they want, if it is in the crate that is ok or a doggy bed beside ours. They will be together I am sure...given the chance so why is it I need to stop it now? By the time they outgrow the crates you will have established stronger life bonds with each dog so it won't matter as much. If you are doing lots of other stuff seperate then perhaps it isn't as important as I would think . Is it possible she just isn't comfortable in the dark? Do you leave a night light on for them?

The fireplace is on so there is light from that and a light on in the kitchen which although not super bright where they are it does provide enough light. I also leave the radio on for them. We tried with and without and not sure it makes much of a difference so we just leave it on.

Enjoy them well there little and dont worry, they will always be cuddlers, our Boxer thinks hes a Big Lap dog sometimes always has to be touching us when laying beside us but we dont mind...he's our big baby!

Thanks I think once you have had a Boxer there is no turning back! We lost our 8 year old Boxer Harley to cancer in August. Hubby swore no more dogs as Harley was mostly his suck. I knew I would wear him down but didn't realize it would be so soon and there would be 2!!! When I see the puppies interact with my girls though it just makes my heart melt. I never want my kids to be afraid of dogs and it was important they grow up with them. My oldest grew up with Harley and when he passed I missed the big dog in the house. Now my youngest will grow up with the 2 new puppies They sure do take a lot of crap from her, but just another reason we love this breed.
