Another blood test today showed minimal improvement to sugar level and white blood cell count. I have been feeding now a few times a day (took work off to do so). She is on antibiotics now for various infections. Her mouth is oozing with discharge from the teeth. Nose is green and thick (kennel cough). Nothing significant today. I will return tomorrow.

My apologies Dr. Lee, I know that they have done so many tests but I really was not interested in which ones because I was just worried about her in general. Everything sounded very jumbled.

The pregnancy will be terminated. They do not feel that she will have enough strength to be able to care for the little ones. Her age and over all health is not on her side. 2 vets have highly recommended this procedure. Our organization is torn into two. We are divided but ultimately the voice of reason (our leader) - is more concerned about her then anything else and wants to focus on stabilizing her and ensuring she gets over this. She is right of course.
One of the vets mentioned that the vaccinations given can cause a ceribrial malformation in the pups that can usually only be detected at 3 months of age. Do you know anything about this?

These things must be costly.. Is there any way to open a paypal account or something or send money as a donation, be it to keep her going on wet food or for her procedures.

Here for you BM.

HOping for nothing but the best for the both or you!

I can understand how people would feel sad for the unborn pups. But when these pups are born, someone will have to bottle feed them around the clock 24/7.....an ethical breeder would do this to save his pups....but an ethical breeder would never have let the mom get this sick and unheathy. Added to this, with all the medical problems this dog has, these pups will probably not be very healthy themselves.
Working in rescue we see many things and I have bottle fed many pups (have a couple now). I have bottle fed puppies from a very unhealthy mom from a mill. Who no one even knew was pregnant. Even with every effort made on a lot of peoples part....5 puppies did not survive, the three I had did...but one with a lot of genetic problems. While I was saving these pups...some healthy others, were beeing put down.

We are in rescue and with so many great dogs beeing put down even as we speak. Unfortunately, we have to make decisions to save the ones we can and focus on the ones that are here now and not the ones that do not need to be.

Has heartbreaking as it sounds, I am sure that Benmax and the vets are making the right decision.

Thank you all so very much. I cannot thank you all for the support and good wishes to my little one. She needs all the thoughts today as her health is declining. We are trying to get a handle on it but it's very difficult. Collectively we are working hard to stabilize her and get her on track. Though I feel horrible about the situation at hand, all my energy and those of the medical staff and rescue are doing what we can for her.

I feel so dumb now trying to cut corners on what to feed. How selfish of me. Even though I volunteer in this field and thought I saw it all, something like this happens. It puts everything back into perspective. To honour her and others I am back on track with my quest to stop puppymills. I was always on it, but now with a vengence. When you have one of these overly breed dogs that are so trusting and yet fell victim to our 'wants', it just infuriates you to know that these people are among you.

Thanks to everyone.

being sent to this little one. I am sure she is a fighter and realizes life is just about to get good!!!!

BenMax, nobody here could possible judge anything you do for this little one...from feeding to treatments. Please don't be too hard on yourself.

Truth is she probably would not even be here if you had not pulled her

Have you thought of a name for her?

Everyone here is rooting for her and for you

Good vibes are being felt. If she only knew how important she is and how everyone is sending only the best of thoughts. Thank you so much.

I have named her Peaches purely by accident. But it's fitting and she is the color of a peach - it all fell together.

In cats, if you vaccinate during pregnancy with a Modified Live panleukopenia virus vaccine then there is documentation of some of the kittens having cerebellar hypoplasia. The killed vaccine does not run this risk but then you have the addition of adjuvants which should never be used in cats, pregnant or otherwise.

In dogs, there is concern for similar phenomenon but I do not have any statistics for you if or when this occurs. I know that there is a concern that the use of a modified live parvo virus vaccine can lead to cardiomyopathy in the puppies. There was one documented case where 9 out of 10 puppies began to die at 4 - 5 weeks of age. Histopathology supported parvovirus cardiomyopathy. Virtually all vaccines with parvo virus use a modified live form as the AAHA no longer recommends the use of the killed parvo virus.

In general, killed vaccines such as Rabies have less possible effects on the fetuses than the modified live. We assume that the time of vaccine during development is a factor however there is insufficient data at this time (I doubt that such data will be readily forthcoming as it would make for a horrible scientific study that would only serve to re-enforce what we know - avoid pregnancy vaccines if possible).

Basically we know that vaccinating pregnant dogs and cats does pose some risk to the fetus, but not necessarily an absolute damage. Benefit versus risk must be assessed for the patient and in general it should be avoided. If it occurs, then close monitoring is recommended for the resulting kittens or puppies.

I hope that clarifies a little.

Here for you too, BenMax, you have my full support. I had to make a hard decision to terminate Molly's pregnacy this summer too. But it was the right thing to do for her (gosh I wish she'd come home ). Sending warm, healing vibes to you and Peaches. Let me know if there's anything I can do from here

Thank you all so much for listening and going on this journey. I am sorry I pulled you all into this but initially this thread was to inquire about the food and things just evolved as they did. I was not expecting things to turn in this direction, but it has and I am grateful to have all of your support and good thoughts and wishes to Peaches.

Dr. Lee, thank you for all your input. Peaches was indeed vaccinated for everything except rabies before I picked her up. I think my vets decision is based on this fact as well as the unlikelyhood that she could nurse and bring up these pups successfully and without complications. She who is always so positive just sat me down and told me like it is. I appreciate that she does not want me to feel badly about this and I understand her concerns. Thank you for your input, it helps alot.

to you BenMax. You do what you need to do to get this girl healthy and don't you dare feel any guilt! I had Benni (tiny cat) aborted on Sunday as well. She is only a year old and 4.4 pounds. Way too tiny to be having litter number two.
I hate people and what they do to their pets. I hate puppymills. I hate the stores that sell the puppies/cats. I have lots of problems understanding the greed that drives someone to do this to another living being.
But I don't hate you or any of the decisions you have had to make to get this sweetie healthy. You are amazing to dedicate your life to so many so totally and completely.
We are here for you. Remember that!

Thank you 14+K. Everyone's words are helping me with this especially this morning.

I am off to vets with Peaches now. It's been a difficult night but I know that her best interest is that of getting her healthy and painfree.

There is a surgical team waiting so I must be off. Thank you all. Hopefully there are no added complications and everything goes as well as can be expected.

All your thoughts and prayers have been and will be conveyed into a huge hug as I hand her over shortly. Bless you all for your support, understanding and for being my sounding board and my strength..

A special thank you to fosterpat for shaking me back into reason. You have been my rock!

I will let you all know how everything goes. This thread is definately off course but it just proves how life changes so quickly by the moment.

Thanks everyone. Spoke with the vet this morning and I feel much better.

Surgery is scheduled for 10:30 am. All positive vibes required in the South Shore Montreal side of town. Let's get her home soon safe and sound.

Thanks all! Everyone has been absolutely beautiful, thoughtful and supportive. I am so relieved that everyone is at my side during this journey with Peaches.

You're such a sweety Bmax. Breeze's idea of grinding the food is great. When l'il zig was as big as a pez candy, but too big for baby food, we introduced him to kibble that was too big for his teeth. We ran it though the food processor, and it worked great.
