We need a book section too.
Winter is the time for reading, I just finished Marley and Me. It was a good read, funny and sad at the end. I kind of reminds me of us here. I guess it touched home to me as I once almost lost a dog to bloat.
I think we need a book section. I need to find another good read any ideas? What are some of your favorite books?

I agree.. I just read a short novel by Elie Weizel called Night and before James Frey , A million little peices.
Both great books. One even regardless of the controversy

I agree that a book forum would be great.
I too read A million little pieces. A good read if alcohol or drugs is the family. Otherwise a very slooow book! I go to amazon and look for the book that I've just read and enjoyed, and then look to see 'what did these people buy too', so I can get an idea of what else is a good read and something that I would like. So for example people who enjoyed Marley and Me, also bought A Year of Magical Thinking, Teacher Man, etc etc. And check at their star ratings. Happy reading!

I've been doing a lot of reading the past few months and joined a book club as well. I'm always surprised at the wide difference of opinions when we have book discussions. There have been books I thought were just beautiful--wonderfully written. But others in the club didn't like them at all. And there was one that half the club thought was great and I didn't really care for. Interesting. My taste in books seems very different from the other members.
I'd love to have a book forum here. Sometimes I'll read a book because it ws suggested by a book club member and it's one I would never have picked up on my own--and I wind up loving that book. So I'm looking for recommendations. Right now I'm reading Consuelo and Alva and it began a little bit slow but after a short while it became fascinating. I read Marley and Me and highly recommend keeping the tissues handy for that one. I cried out loud. Our next book club selection is To Kill a Mockingbird. Not a new book but well worth a re-read and discussion. I haven't read Elie Weisel but one of my children really lkes him. (Am I a bad mother because I can't remember which one?) A couple of older books I would really recommend are memoirs. One is "Having Our Say" by Sarah and Bessie Delaney and "When I was Puerto Rican" by Esmerelda Santiago. Oh I read Teacher Man and liked that one also. I like the McCourt brothers and having been a teacher this was interesting to me. It had it's pignant moments and I do like the way both Frank and Malachy write with honest looks at themselves. They're not self aggrandizing. (I met them both and Frank seemed rather shy--of course we were just passing in a hotel corridor so you woudn't expect him to be real chatty. And we met Malachy at a book signing when I bought my son "A Monk Swimming" Now he WAS a chatty fellow and as charming as anyone I've ever met !! ) Oh last month we read A Kite Runner---it was riveting. Many levels to it and a little heavy but surely worth reading. Before You Know Kindness by Chris Bohjalian also has several levels. Family relationships, respecting one anothers lifestyles, animal rights issues. I enjoyed that one a lot. I think it hit home since I make different dietary choices than some and also we tend not to think of our dog as just a dog, he's a valued member of the family (can anyone relate? ) so the varying points of view were fun to ponder there. Oh good grief--I am going on and on and on...... Book section?? YES--GREAT IDEA !! |

Yup - a book forum does seem to be a good idea! Do others agree?
Were we talking about pet books - or books in general or both?

I think both. I don't think you have to sepcify because peopel can open their own threads according to the type of book they are looking for or to review one they read.
YOu can have a review and reccomendation section also. Joeys mama I read Angelas ashes and Tis. Very good books. I like the McCourts also. Two of my favorite books were Lovely bones by Alice Sebold and She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb. Really loved She's come undone. I really like books non fiction or fiction that are real life drama's. The book I read of Elies was my first, took me a day as it was just under 200 pages but it read well and fast and was to the point. I like authors who are descrpitive but too descriptive then I lose interest.

I think a book forum is a great idea.
I know it's been out for a while, but I finally read "Wicked". I thought it was excellant. It really made you think of different morals and views, questionable politics, and just looking at things from a different point of view. Sometimes we jump to conclusions on things and don't think of the other side before we base our opinions. I like how it opens your mind to more viewpoints.

I like the idea of a book forum. I like all books written by John Saul. They are a little mystery and a little scary, but he is a very good writer.

I like this idea. I also like the idea of having both general and pet based, maybe for the pet section there could be subforums for fiction and non-fiction, training, health. Sometimes I see reccommendations on books for training, but often forget which thread the title is in, it's own forum would make finding titles sooo much easier. I'm one of those people who wander aimlessly through the bookstore, I get overwhelmed by how many books there are, sometimes I don't even wind up getting anything 'cause I'm worried that I will detest the book and I'm wasting money. I'll buy a book if a friend has reccommended it though, so, I hope there will be some great reviews, then my wanderings won't seem so fruitless. |

I get overwhelmed in the book store also. Everything looks good to me and I want to be careful how I spend my money. But I do love buying a book that's been recommended.
I know when I get to heaven it's going to be a huge-gantic Barnes and Noble. One of the really good ones with a Starbucks !! |

I work in a library and I will never catch up on my reading. I have a list of titles that I want to read "when I have time". Elie Weisel's Night is on it. It's on Reserve so I don't want to bring it home, making it unavailable to students. Last book I read was First They Killed My Father written by a Cambodian immigrant. I very seldom read fiction now as a collegiate library doesn't have much in that area, except for the classics of course. Disposable People is an eye-opener about the "new" slavery that takes place currently in Thailand, India, South America, etc.

Book forum - GREAT idea!
When I have time (that 20 nanoseconds before I crash headlong onto my bed !) I'm a huge fan of "police procedurals" - Ian Rankin and Ken Bruen are my two current fave's. Minette Walters can spin a good yarn - Acid Row was an all-nighter for me. Ohhh and the series with Dalziel and Pascoe by____? A book forum would be super. For animal-oriented books as well. I often get things out of the library before I decide whether they are "keepers" (in addition to shoe issues, I have book issues and am running out of room for more bookcases!). Just bought "The Mythology of Dogs" - Gerald and Loretta Hausman - a good subway read (pick it up/ put it down - short snippet kind of read). Gee if this really got going - we could have an online "bookclub" !

I'll check it out for sure.

I don't know if it will be busy enough for subforums... How many pet books are there? Maybe if people just use descriptive titles?

Please, Please!
I would love a book forum! I just about eat books and love discussing them. I'm a Sci-fi/Fantasy buff mostly, but if it's got pages, it will do. Recommendations are always welcome, since the local library is not so big and I'd love to have specific books to look for if my usual sections don't have anything new.
joeysmama, I just re-read To Kill A Mockingbird for about the 20th time-I love it. It's on my yearly re-read list. Right now, I'm finishing up Stephen King's It-also a yearly re-read for me. Anyone have any suggestions for my next book-lol! |

With everyone's suggestions, I just picked up Marley and Me. I'm not going to read it today -- going to just lay around, but I plan on starting it tomorrow. I'll be sure to have a box of tissues next to me! I'll let you know what I think.

Ok all new book sub-forum off the off topic forum has been created.
For now the sub forum will include both pet books and non pet books. If members who have posted in this thread could start individual threads with the book title as the thread title in that new book sub-forum, that would be a good start. If it's a pet book the thread is about can posters please put (Pet book) or (dog book) etc. in the Thread title so visitors can distinguish between pet books and non pet books. Ok so who is going to be the first poster in the new subforum......Go! Thanks all, Marko |

Skryker, my yearly re-read is "Gone with the Wind", you might want to read that next. It is very long though! I recently read "Memoirs of a Geisha" it too was a great read. I think a book forum is a great idea, Prin, your idea sounds great, just using descriptive titles would work!
Anytime I get to myself is spent reading, I love it! I read anything and everything from Stephen King to Ernest Hemingway. I also read a lot of Oprah book club suggestions too. I too read James Frey's A Million Little Pieces, what a great book! I guess I could ramble on and on......... |
