Crating -- Is it a must?
Hi everyone
I recently got a Shih-poo puppy (current 2.5 months old), and we are not crating her. She has an exercise area with her litter pad, food/water dish, bed. She is completely litter-trained already, but not trained to go outdoors yet (we may wait till Spring to do this as its quite cold right now in Ontario). She stays in the pen when we are not there to supervise her. Is it a "must" to crate her? What are the pro's and con's of crating vs the exercise pen? Attached are images of Coco's current set up, please take a look. Thanks!! |

OMG!!!!!! I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is just toooo cute!!!! What you are doing is basically crating her except on a larger scale from what I can see. Crates work fantastically but if she is learning this way why change it?

Your setup is equivalent to crating and even a little better. If your pup is already using the litter and or is housebroken, then she has acheived the first step for crating. The second reason for crating is to give them some security a place that will be their own. It will keep her safe from hazards a puppy usually gets into and will keep your furniture and anything else safe from her chewing. If further down the road she develops separation anxiety, fear of thunder or loud noises, then crating will give her that security she needs and she will never become a problem dog! Good luck and just enjoy the puppy stages, they grow so quickly.

Wow, is Coco ever a cutie-pie! And that's a great set-up you got going. Here's some more info for you on confinement, if you're interested: http://www.dogstardaily.com/training...-amp-doggy-den. It goes into detail about "long-term confinement" areas, which is what your puppy-pen would be, and then "short-term confinement", which would be the use of a crate. Both have merit depending on the situation.
And if you have any more pics of your little sweetie-pie, we'd love to see 'em!

We started with a crate when Dazy was little - she was never as little as your pooch tho, hahah! Very cute by the way! She is now in an x-pen too, with a bed and water and stuffies, it's the same thing, as long as they are safe and secured, it's all good.

While crate training is not absolutely necessary for potty training, I honestly think that you should crate train also.
You never know when something might happen when your puppy is required to be crated. I know that in some cases this can be an issue during weather emergencies or medical emergencies. Also, you might want to consider crating while your dog rides in the car. A dog this small can become a missile in a high speed accident and is much more likely to survive with little trauma.

Dogs are den animals by nature. Absolutely nothing wrong with crating.
My yellow lab puppy loves it. I understand that they will begin to associate the crate with a "safe place."

I'd go insane if we didn't have a crate.
When doors open and close all the time with 5 adults living in the same house (extended family), there's many chances for a furry one to escape unnoticed, especially when bringing in wood for the woodstove. Lost count how many times Linx got stuck between doors in the part of our house that has a series of 2 doors before you can get outside. I often ask him if he was stuck in purgatory. Can't recommend a crate enough.

When we got our siberian husky (now almost 3 yr. old) we never crate trained him but we did crate train our lab (now almost 2 1/2 yr. old). All I can say is I sure wish we had have crate trained the sibe.
Coco is adorable and the setup you have is fine. |

We crate trained our 3 month old bichon/pekingese...and it was the best thing for us and her...we only put her in the crate at night - it allows us to sleep, but we but a toy or 2 in there for her, so if she gets bored, she won't wake us up. during the day while we are gone, we keep her in the kitchen so she has room to run and play. we started in a small area (so it wasn't too big for her to be scared) and now she's got the full kitchen and loves it...we often find her toys scattered all over the place from her playing! her bed stays in the kitchen and we have a blanket in the crate. she doesn't seem to be confused and understands that both are safe places.
very cute by the way!! |

For your little cutie pie to have a snugglie little den, you might want to put a crate in her pen. It amazes me how some dogs like to have a tight space to sleep in. I had a black lab mix, and a pom mix that usually slept curled up together in a tiny bathroom closet (they were never kenneled, and had the run of the house). With current dog, kenneling is a must, she is mischievous one

crate training is a personal choice. I used it and i am very happy i did. However i would start training your dog to go outside now.
Its very important she get used to things at a young age, she needs to be socialized in a variety of areas including outdoors, and be trained outside as well. dogs can act much different in different situations and its best to train early. i think you will regret keeping her inside till the spring. you dont have to keep her outside for hours but dont worry she can handle the cold for a bit
