kitty's two part poops
hi all,
i am at a loss. my kitty for 12 years has been a very good kitty. and it's not that she is bad, but over the last half year, she has been doing two part poops. i know this sounds strange, but i have been surfing the web for advice as to why my kitty is doing this. first stage, she actually begins and goes a little in her litter box. she sniffs it and walks away...i remove her duty if i am present and know that she has gone. if it happens when i am gone, she has done some in the box and the rest somewhere else, on a scatter rug....i watched one day to see what she does. she poops and then leaves. then she comes back, sniffs her box, it's just been used so she walks away and meows, then i catch her squatting on one of my rugs. i did pick her up (after emptying part 1) and put her in the box. she sniffed, noticed part 1 was gone and finished. it appears that she can't stand the smell of her own poop and runs away...then if i am not right there, she has to finish it somewhere else. i am at my wits end....of course along with pooping comes a small amount of urine and she is stinking up the place. help!!!! |

Easy! Get another litter box or 2.

How often is the litter completely changed? Should be at least once a week.
If you have the bucks, I've seen the litter-genie in action and have a neighbor that swears by it. http://www.catgenie.com/

Great advice! Kitty is most likely pretty fastidious in her habits so if you can't always be there - two or three boxes.
To get rid of the "she's stinking up the place" try Nature's Miracle. It's available at most good pet supply stores. If not available try a mix of either 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol or 1/4 cup peroxide mixed with 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1 cup water. Spray the area well, scrub, repeat. Let dry. If you can still smell it then repeat. Try getting a black light and checking to see if there are any places you may have missed. Quote:
I caution anyone who has a skittish cat against purchasing the litter genie or any other automatic litter cleaning box. All it would take is one time for the box to turn on while the cat is still in it and you take the chance of having continuing toileting issues.

I agree,my cats would freak out with the Genie,Chico is even afraid of my ironing-board.
I have 2 large rubber-maid boxes,I still use the claylitter, mine poop in one and pee in the other. I only change the entire litter every 2 weeks. To the OP,2 boxes would be great for your kitty.

Everyone is talking about cat litter. Yet my first thought upon reading this is that the cat is constipated and needs to see the Vet.

From what the OP has said, it doesn't seem like a constipation issue, especially since the same issue has been going on for a year and the kitty finishes, just in a different area. But then again, I have dogs, not kitties, and I know they are very different!!

In terms of the litter-genie, all I can say is that it works really well for my neighbor that has 4 cats. It only goes on after the cat does it's business not while. I'm guessing that there are settings so that if you DID need to check on urine or feces you could set a delay on the 'flushing'. Quote:
