New Shihtzu owner

Hi,
We've just got our first dog, her name is Bailey and she is an Imperial Shihtzu. So far she has been very good. Started with pee pads but within a couple days she has made her way outdoors, and loves it. We have also begun crate training her for when noone is home and at night. The first night was horrible, tried everything, I finally had to sleep on the couch with her crate beside me, before she would settle and sleep. We have since moved her crate to the bedroom at night with a radio playing quietly. She settles in much better now and only whimpers for about 5 mins. Any tips on anything we could/should know would be great.

Aw, she's a sweetie!!

My advice would be to move the crate into the bedroom at night, so you're way ahead of me! Also, I'd leave the crate open during the day when you're home and put her toys in it so she associates it with something other than mom and dad being gone. Our dogs are all older and trustworthy in the house, but we still have a couple of kennels available for them to use if they want a 'safe' place, like during a thunder storm (we have a couple with storm phobias).

Welcome to the board, dmcasey and Bailey!

Congratulations! She's adorable.

We have a 10 year old female shih tzu. They are a wonderful breed.

We did weekly obedience lessons with her for her first year, as both she and I loved it. Using clicker training, she learned at a very fast rate. Now, her willingness to obey commands is sort of dependent on her mood

We kept her crated during the day (with a walk at lunch) until she was about 2 years old. This kept her safe and prevented accidents while we were away. For her first year I also found I had to take her for several walks a day to drain her energy, as well as a trip to the park to play fetch.

have fun!
