Training a Wheaton - Impossible!

I love my 10 month old Wheaton Brady - BUT SO EXCITABLE! We managed to teach him how to sit, but other than that - nothing. He loves to chew anything - and I mean anything.....If he does not have a bone, its a table, a shoe, crayons, toilet paper - anything.

We are working on the chewing slowly and he does understand the word "no". He has a very short attention span.

He is really jumping on people - we need this to stop. He gets so exited that he does not even hear us when we are trying to correct him.

Any hints???? UGH.

He is my little

I have no answers for you,but he is a "terrible terrier",my son has a Jack Russel Terrier and when she was a pup,she chewed the coffeetable, couch, kitchen cupboards etc..,just about destroyed his condo.
I suggested crating her, when he was working, but to no avail.
However now at 5 yrs old,she is a wonderful little dog,so there is hope

He is 10 months old and should be under better control by now. It is not the dog but what you are teaching, how consistant you are and knowing what and how to teach to get what you want. I would enroll into a training class so that you have a trainer to help you through the different stages and cues.
Also if your pup is chewing things then you need to reduce his freedom.

Actually, it's not the Wheaten... it's your dog.. We have two Wheaten's now in rescue, both are around the same age, both are calm but playful... know sit, shake a paw and are beginning to heel nicely when out for walks and do not jump up on guests. They are under 5 months old. As StacyB suggested, you need to take some obedience classes with your dog to nip this in the bud. Good luck, they are lovely dogs.

How much exercise, and what kind, is your dog getting? Wheatens are usually one of the calmer terrier breeds, but of course this varies with the individual.

we adopted a 2year old airedale 3 months ago who is exactly the same as your wheaton. we brought in a trainer for a one on one and her advise for jumping on people was to leash him when people first come in and give them a treat to give him when he sits. the other thing she said is if he jumps to cross your arms and turn away no talking or looking at him till he sits and behaves. she said that everyone has to do the same so he does not get confused

It is difficult to get strangers or visitors to know what to do or even to do it properly. It will be your job to control and teach not to jump on others.
