How do you make a dog stop whining??

How do you stop a dog from whining????

Buster used to have a bark problem, but we got that under control. Now he WHINES....A LOT! Sometimes it's a good thing, when he has to go out, his bowls are empty, etc. But he has taken control of us by whining!!! If he wants to play, he sits and whines, if you aren't paying attention to him, he sits and whines. He know that hubby takes him out every day to run and fetch sticks which he LOVES to do, so he whines at the gate to go and play fetch. But he does this 10-15 times a day!!!!

I am thinking we should try and ignore the whining, but that's very difficult to do.

Any suggestions??

for the important RIGHTS (ie going outside or empty water bowl) we gave an alternative, ring a bell, jingle door handle... things liek that. all others are on OUR terms. we ahve a really busy house so it sort of has to be that way. i cant drop everything and play fetch with Mister. whining gets the opposite of what he is whining for. he wants INSIDE (which doesnt fall under the 'life forms given right' if only because there are half a million reasons why we wouldnt want him in the house right then) he will never get let in the house if he is whining. he has to STOP whining to be let in. we tell him he is a good boy in situations where he usually whines but isnt. not sure how much of an effect that has. *shrugs*

Mr is a pro whiner though. its not a problem i think will every go away. its just one we barely manage.

is this something that started after Harley passed??

Ashley, actually it has started since Harley died......never really thought about that

Ignoring doesn't do it....or maybe I just haven't tried long (or hard) enough?

It's just that he is just so darn cute when he sits and whines at us.....little head tilts at the same time.

You said it - he has taken control.

What did you do to get Buster to stop barking?

Maybe he started whining after the other dog and Buster's humans felt sorry for him and thought the whining was him missing his pal, and so the humans began to do things with Buster in order to make him feel better? If so, then Buster learned, "hey I can make this noise and people do fun things, maybe this is what I need to do to say I want ___________."

Just an idea.

I used the citronella bark collar to get buster to stop his barking. I only had to put it on him a couple of times and after that, all I had to do was say "I will get your collar". So, that stopped the barking, but the collar won't stop whining.

I am sure he continues whining because he knows he gets the attention....my fault!

How do you

I use an empty soda can with 3 - 4 pennies in it, seal the opening with tape and shake it when I want the barking, whining or destructive behaviour to stop. The 1st few times I threw it at something to get their attention, yelled NO and after a few such episodes they caught on. Now (although very rarely) if they're barking for what ever reason and I want them to quit I just have to pick it up and look at them. Perhaps shaking it at your pup and saying NO will realize his whining isn't going to get the results he's expecting.

well, ignore the whining about the things you dont want him to whine about. it will get worse before it gets better! if possible, give him an alternative or make him understand that YOU are the boss and YOU make the rules. Mister can whine all he wants but it wont GET him anything.

just remember, it WILL get worse before it gets better. soemone put it to me like this-

if every time i clapped i gave you a $100 bill.... one day i STOP giving you money when you clap. your first reaction would be to clap closer to me, then to clap more... then to clap RIGHT in my face to make sure i heard you. eventually you would either get it or i would give in and give you a $100 bill to get you to stop clapping in my face.

you need to make sure you dont give in. if you do, the next time you make a stand, Buster will just whine more.

good luck with it!! we thought about modifying the citronella collar to a remote and setting it off for his whining at one point but we stuck with it and its gotten MUCH better. i accidentally must have let him in the house when he was whining once a few weeks ago because he has been whining at the door lately. *shrugs* it just gets him to sit out there longer.
