Test for rabies immunity?

Does anyone out there know if the vet can perform a blood test to see if a cat has been vaccinated against rabies? If this isn't possible, we may have to euthanize a sweet little kitty.

They can do it for a lot of diseases in humans, why not call a vet and ask. Why would a kitty have to be put down?

Yeah... I'm not quite sure why the cat would be put to sleep... I'm pretty curious.

I would call up a vet clinic and ask them. They will be able to advise you further.

I also don't understand why the cat will have to be euthanized if the test isn't available. If the cat has been bitten by a possibly rabid animal, call a vet. I believe there are vaccines to give after an animal is bit, I'm not 100% sure though. Otherwise the cat would have to be quarantined for approx 10 days. Unless you are positive that the cat has been bit by a rabid animal, I don't understand why the cat would have to be pts.

I guess if a strange cat bit a person, and they didn't know if it was vaccinated then maybe it would be a reason to put it down and test for rabies.

I agree with calling vet asap. You have not provided enough information as to why you have raised the question. If indeed you do suspect that your kitty has been bitten by a rabid animal, I think that the vet will make time for you very fast. The biting chain could just continue.

They should be able to. Many people who do not vaccinate every year have their pets "titered", which is when the vets take blood and determine if they still hold immunity. I'd give your vet a call and ask if they can, or if they know of a vet who can.

Ther poster is from Florida. A titer test will be of no use. A proof of vaccination is the law here if the cat bit someone. But it still not a death sentence even if the cat was never vaccinated. The cat would be quarantined even if it tangled with a known rabies suspect. If a pet was previously vaccinated but out of date some counties have allowed at home quaratines. The only time I have heard of a forced euthanasia is when a unvaccinated pet bit someone and was exhibiting classic symptoms and time was an issue to start the HDC series.
