Dog peeing issues, slightly different
Hi everyone, I am new to the site. I first checked the logs, but my question seems to be slightly different than archived questions and answers. I hope you can help!
I have an 11 month old wheaton, Maggi May. She was very easy to potty train to a specific area in our yard, by about 9 weeks. Twice since that time she began randomly peeing in the house, mostly on carpeting of course, for no reason. She would go upstairs to play with the kids, run out of their rooms, do her thing in the hall and then run back to play. I began penning her in the kitchen area again and this rectified the issue within 2 days the first time and 1 the second. She's a smart girl! Unfortunately, she began, in the last few weeks, getting up in the night, without waking me, and peeing by the bedroom door. She, at some point later in the night, wakes me up and and is usually panting. If I give her a drink or take her out, she is fine and then goes back to bed. Crating her in my bedroom at night may stop the peeing by the door, but I am also troubled by this waking me up as well. Not that I mind, but this is something new over the last month. She has been sleeping in our bedroom, without incident since she was 4 months old. She is in perfect health. So, I guess my question is, does anyone have some ideas on why she keeps reverting during the day and any thoughts on the night time incidents? Thanks for taking the time to read my long post |

Re: waking you up in the night, I think she may continue to wake you up because by taking her out you are reinforcing the behaviour. An 11-month old pup shouldn't need to go out during the night. BUT, if you feel she is actually really needing to go and it isn't a behavioural thing, you may want to get her checked out for a UTI. That may even explain the increased peeing in the house...and if your vet rules that out then I would think it's behavioural, and there are lots of senior members on here that can help you with that!

I'm just bumping this up so Maggi's Mum gets some other opinions aside from my , since I'm not entirely sure about the situation.

I agree that a vet visit is in order to rule out any UTI or other problems. The panting is a little unusual (unless your home is very warm) and is often an indication that a pet is uncomfortable or stressed.
If a vet rules everything all clear then I would consider crating her in your room at night (or use an exercise pen). What time do you feed her in relation to going to bed? Perhaps if it is really quite close then consider feeding a bit earlier and also consider restricting water access closer to bedtime. Good luck.

Wouldn't you know it, Maggi went through the night last night without peeing or waking me up! As per my original post, she is in perfect health and I do not suspect a UTI due to infrequency of instances during the day. I had also noted that I may try the crating in my room, as suggested. I had considered the food/water idea and will definitely give that try. Thanks for your help.
Any thoughts on why she gives up her potty training every few months. I have never heard of this before. Maybe she is testing me and pushing the boundaries, just like the kids LOL |
