Bunnies!!

I have a Netherland Dwarf bunny, and she just had babies 4 days ago. She had another litter exactly a month before she had the other babies. One of the 2 just died yesterday, and I'm concerned that the one that's left will get cold and die. And will the death leave the mother upset at all? Also, I was wondering how much getting a rabbit spayed or neutered costs in Canada.

Getting a bunny spayed is about the same cost as a cat, or may be more, since they may have to use a special anesthetic for her and rabbits are much more fragile than cats.

Is the mother not taking care of her remaining baby? Do you have them in a warm place? You might try keeping the cage in a small room that is easy to heat, like a bathroom.

The baby is doing good, it's 6 days old already, and is growing fur. Do you know when it would be safe to put the month old babies in with their dad?

NO!!! Dad will probably kill it. Rabbits can be quite territorial, and males often won't tolerate an "intruder." I doubt the mother is upset....is she nursing & keeping the baby warm now?

If you keep the adults together, maybe you can check into neutering the male instead...? It's a much simpler operation.

I wasn't really planning on putting the babies in the cage with the dad until they were at least 8 weeks old. He loves the company, I recently introduced him and the month old babies. He immediately started licking their ears. I would rather get the female fixed, because it reduces the chance of her getting uterine cancer at age 2. Do you know how long netherland dwarfs live for? I heard up to 10 years, but I also heard 3-4. The mother is also keeping the baby very warm and fed, and the baby and mother seem very content. here are two pics of the one month old babies,

I read too that Dwarfs can live like 10 years.

I had my Dwarf spayed when she was under a year. They used the same anesthetic gas they use for cats, Isoflurane and she was fine, but you might read that Isoflourine is recommended for rabbits.

It was also my vets very first rabbit spay so he did it for free.

Thanks, I'm really proud of them, they're all doing so good! I'm glad that they can live for about 10 years. My mom thought that the vet cost for them to get fixed would be about $125, but I heard that it was closer to the same as cats. Do you know if they'd do it at the SPCA? Because I have a coupon for a free spaying or neutering.

Well what you can do is call them and they will let you know.Also,ask them if they know of a vet close to you that does.

I was told that rabbits when afraid tense their back and neck muscles so tightly that they can actually break / snap their spine!

I know they do rabbits at the SPCA in Newmarket, so they probably do at other ones.

Your bunnies look just like my Bud who passed away last summer. I never had him fixed because he only had dogs for siblings so I'm not sure about the cost involved in that. I do remember reading somewhere that fathers and daughters cannot mate, but mothers and sons can (but it could be the other way around).
Bud was a grey netherland dwarf who looked exactly like your babies. He lived to be 9 1/2 years old and I had him put to sleep last year because he wouldn't eat, could hardly breathe and wasn't responding to medications. I miss him.

Bueller's mommy I'm sorry to hear about your bunny. I'm giving my 2 month old babies away, too bad you don't live closer, hehe. I'm really going to miss them when they go! I'm not sure if I have to give the other baby away, though. I kind of hope not!
