The article states : "The traps are legal and humane"

maybe legal because our system sucks but humane ? There's nothing humane about those traps

Nice Mayor

Oshawa Mayor John Gray doesn’t see any alternative to lethal trapping. “No one likes killing wildlife, but what are you going to do?” he said. “You’ve got to get rid of the critters.”

I was watching about the Beavers on the news the other day

There was a guy whose dog had been attacked by the beaver. I thought he was being quite sensible when he wasn't blaming the Beaver. I heard they had young ones. Then the guy said the dog will just have to get along with the Beaver. Is he nuts.

Keep your dogs away from there. They don't have to go in the water there. What is the matter with people.

Has anyone considered the cheap and easy solution of posting signs along the water during kit season warning owners of the possible conflicts? Seems like it might be worth a try, anyway.

I mentioned the Oshawa Beavers in one of L4H's thread's,I am outraged at them calling these traps"humane",they either break the Beavers back or trap it's legs so it drowns.it's like a giant mouse-trap.
I am soooo angry with the Ministry of Natural Resources they do nothing but kill our wildlife,it's not the first time they go on a killing-spree
What the heck are they good for

These by the way are not the same Beavers that killed the dog..

Oh, sorry, Chris! Guess I should have read past the first few lines of the article.

I can't believe they set those traps on dry land! That's illegal here--they must be set underwater to minimize the possibility of children and/or pets getting to them and also to make them more 'humane'...in that the beaver drowns quickly rather than suffers in the trap till it's checked again.

Hazel,I could be wrong, but I believe the traps are set under water, which to me does not make it any more humane

Here is Ontario fur managers federation regulations, regarding trapping/drowning. I posted a thread in the Wildlife section, regarding the Ontario Fur Managers Federations and their regulations, if anyone is interested in learning more about it.

25. It is illegal for any person to:

b) Set leghold traps for beaver, otter, mink or muskrat unless the trap is set under ice, or it is attached to a sliding lock or a heavy object and set in such a manner that the captured animal would be immediately submerged and drowned. This does not apply to a leghold trap set for mink or muskrat if the trap will sub-merge the animal in water immediately upon springing the trap or the trap is heavy enough to prevent it from resurfacing.

27. A trapper or a farmer shall inspect at least once daily every live-holding trap set by him in that part of Ontario south of the most northerly east-west line of the Canadian National Railway Company.

BUT then they add this is their Code of Conducts: This is laughable:

Up-to-date Conibear or similar killing traps should be used in trapping to ensure that captured animals are trapped as efficiently and humanely as possible.

But drowning an animal seems to be considered humane and efficiently?? Drowning is a slow process, which an animal suffers greatly. Plain and simple. And checking a trap once within a 24 hour period (which is what they mean by daily) I wonder how many animals lied their injured for hours, because this killing trap, didn't kill it instantly.

Now, i know people will post the reasoning for drowning an animal for fur bearing purposes, but trying to justify inhumanely killing an animal, all due to profit, etc, so sad

From the article:

Quote:
Thirty animal lovers staging a protest at Goodman Park on Saturday were even more horrified to see two metal traps discovered by a Whitby resident on the dam the day before.

“I activated it with my spade and bam! — like a big mousetrap,” Jack Snedden told them. “It scared the heck out of me.”

The traps, which were firmly planted above water, could have killed a dog or child, he fumed.
I hope whoever set those traps has been disciplined then, since they were in clear violation of the law.

Traps are always a worry around here
