cocker spaniel digs at legs until they are bloody.

Does anyone out there know why the dog is chewing at her legs until they bleed. She has several "sore-like" spots on her front legs like this. She has gone to the vet several times and they don't seem to know. her food has been changed and cut down but nothing seems to work for her. I feel so sorry for her!!!

Do you have any idea what tests were run or if any medical issues have been eliminated?

How long has the spaniel been doing this? Weeks? Months? Years? How old is the dog?

Is she only doing this to her legs? If so, are they getting wet on a regular basis when the rest of her body is staying dry? If so, it might be an environmental issue (could even be detergent or laundry softener if you're using a towel to dry the legs off after a walk). Or are you checking for things like spear grass getting stuck to her fur?

And like Love4himies says - have you given single-ingredient raw foods to eliminate specific allergies?

Is this the same vet that treated the other two dogs?

If allergies (food or environmental) are ruled out, it can also be purely psychological. Some dogs will lick spots on their front legs raw; boredom, anxiety or compulsive behaviour can be the source. One of our dogs will lick her forelegs, and the inner part of her thighs, raw, if not closely monitored.
