parvo in older dogs

there is a warning in my local paper today due to a fast increase of parvo in the area (its summer). but it said that parvo generally strikes those under 12 months but will strike a dog up to 18 months?

is that true and if so why have i paid $65 per year for the past 9 years for bloody parvo booster shots, is it because an older dog can carry the virus and hand it on to the babies or put it in the soil??

they wont let a dog be in a boarding kennel, dog resort or dog school here if they are not up to date with shots even the old ones, so am i right in assuming vacinating older dogs is for puppy protection??? is it a form of precautionary action for the just odd cases in older animals?? or am i jsut being scammed by the vets? (i bet i am).
cheers all.

I know of no vet or kennel that will board or do surgery on any animal unless they are current on all vaxs.

Parvo can live in the soil for a long time. Sunlight will kill the rabies virus and even the aids virus, but will not kill parvo. An infected stray dog can walk in your yard and defecate, and your dog can come down with parvo a year later. It is a contact exposure. Incubation time is roughly 10 to 14 days.

Where I live parvo is always a danger. We have a "season" too where we see many more exposures.

I have seen more than my share of this disease. People who work around parvo in the south can "smell" a parvo dog when they come in the door.

Take this disease very serious and protect your dogs.

Parvo is evil.

quote 'Take this disease very serious and protect your dogs.'

as i said in my post i have been paying through the nose for years, but my question is in relation to the age factor, the interview in the paper was with a local vet and he said it did not affect older than 18mths, i jsut want to know if that is true and if we continue to do it as a preventative for soils and pups, like maleria shots in humans, or similar that lower the incedence of the dieseae and sort of control it..

over here in aus if you dont have parvo shots you can still see a vet and get a dog fixed, they just cant go to boarding kennels etc. many farmers and hunters i know do not have it done.

but my quesiton is in relation to age etc. and weather this disease really affects the old as the local vet has clearly stated it does not.

The oldest dog to come down with parvo that I have seen was 5 years old. And he had many other issues as well.

When we found Meat Loaf and he had parvo the vet said that like 98% if all dogs that get Parvo get it under the age of 18mts. But I guess there is always a chance. It can also lay dorment in the ground and dogs can get it that way. That is one shot I reccomend everyone getting. You do not want your dog to get Parvo, it is one bad thing. Take it from me!

Seriously, what is it? I've never heard of it, does it only occur in certain areas?
