Canadian / US Customs
Anyone have any experience adopting a shelter pup across the border? If the pup is too far away, we'd have to have him/her shipped... Can anyone offer the best way to get this done.

To bring a dog across the Canadian/US border, you need a certificate showing that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies within the last 3 years.
The certificate must clearly identify that dog - breed, sex, colour, weight, etc. |

Good question!
Do you have to pay customs if you paid an adoption fee for the dog if if you bought a dog from a breeder?

Hi Sarah
I cross the border often.
No, you won't have to pay any duty on an adoption dog, however, you may have to prove ownership. Therefore if you adopt, make sure the accompanying papers have YOUR correct name and address on them. IF you cannot prove ownership, customs could interpret that you are importing the animal for resale, and can block the importation - or - decide to charge you duty and GST etc. Cheers M<M
