frustrated with biting
We recently purchased a Golden Retreiver, Molly. She is 10 weeks old, and is learning very rapidly how to sit, shake-a-paw, and is almost completely house broken (knock on wood!).
The problem we are having is she is very nippy. It seems to start playfully, but she doesn't know when to stop. We have tried tapping her on the nose when she does it, but it doesn't work. We are also worried because the bigger she gets, the harder she can bite! It has gotten to the point that when she gets out of control, we put her in her crate for a "time-out" for about 5 minutes. Now when we go to work, she doesn't want to go into the crate, whereas before she would go inside. I am don't want her to be afarid of the crate, or feel she is being punished by going in there. I need help!! I don't want my puppy to become ruler of the house, or overly aggressive. Any suggestions? |

At 10 weeks old I doubt this nipping is aggression its puppy play, as they would with one another.
I am NOT a fan of tapping the dog on the nose Redirect the chewing elsewhere be creative and read some other posts on here. Your dog is NOT vicious cause it's chewing at 10 weeks

I have a 14 week old Border Collie who I have had the same troubles with.
I have him in puppy training and he is excelling at everything except this. The trainers say you are supposed to yelp like a puppy when he nips at you and say "off". If this does not work you are to remove yourself from the situation. This apparently is a punishment to your pup and with consistent use will work. So, far our pup has made progress but the problem certainly isn't gone and we don't expect it to be for some time. I t has been a long time since we've have had a puppy - patience is DEFINITELY a virtue!! |

Chewing and biting is what puppies do, plus retrievers are even worse for this than many other breeds.
You're right - the crate should never ever be used for punishment, so you'll have to start all over with the crate training to make positive associations with it. For the biting, here's an article which I think will help. Puppy biting |
