help! my dog is a digger!

I like to think of my self as someone who's not totally dog noob, I've had dogs before and puppies too. Trained them to become very respectable canine friends for our family, and even others.

But I never had to deal with this behaviour : Titus is a digger, maybe its the breed, maybe he got that from his mom whos always digging (and he saw her dig a lot) The thing is, we have a yard, that for now is a mess since we moved in recently and didn't have the time to fix everything yet. We were planing to put grass next spring, but we're hopping to break this digging habbit before then!

Anyway to prevent him digging? he's young, so I assume whatever way that might work should work easily. Hes also very smart (when he wants to He comes, sit, stays, shakes hand, speak and now give kisses when asked ...we're still working on the "bang", but i'm not rushing things, hes just 3 months ^^

Thanks!

A.

You have to divert the attention when he digs. The command come and his favourite toy. Encourage the play activity to keep his mind occupied with something more fun.

Is he bored perhaps? Is he digging to lie down in it? Is he digging to hide something?

What is his breed?

Husky
I doubt hes bored, he plays a lot with his toys, and is never left alone outside for too long (like 2-3 minutes when I go get him a waterbowl or something) he also digs at the dog park lol

but i'll try to get his attention next time I see him

Our Husky X was a chronic digger up until a few months ago, he had a penchant for digging in the same spots, Hubby would fill the hole and the next day he would re-dig. Hubby started filling the holes with stones and covering it with earth, so when he returned to re-dig, he didn't like it. I don't know if that is what stopped him or he just grew out of it. He will be 2 in december, but he does not dig anymore. Hopefully it is just a phase.

he didint seem to dig because of the warmth though, it used to be very warm here (and humid) for a few days, but we always kept him inside as much as possible (Long live AC!) and he layed on the ceramic floors of the kitchen hehe
