Rexie problems- embarrassed
hi everyone!!
k, this is the thing, yesterday me and rexie went on a walk, and he was playing and running with another dog, but when i would call him to come, he didn't come, i was soooo embarrassed. he doesn't listen to me when there are distractions-- and still barks at people as they walk by ( not as much tho) i'm getting frustrated again, cause i keep on training, and it doesn't work.. i took him to obedience classes, but the teacher was horrible and my vet told me to stop the classes asap. so i did, half way through.. and i really don't have any money cause of school-- in the summer i did .. i don't have the money to pay 200-300 bucks again for a trainer tips ? suggestions ? comments ?

Read sandra11's thread below. You can't let your dog off leash until he has a reliable recall.
When he's playing and having fun and you call him, he knows that means the fun is over, so of course he won't come and he knows he doesn't have to. Get a very long lead - even a nlyon clothes line and leave it on him so it's always within your reach. Call him. If he doesn't come immediately, reel him in on the line and when he gets to you, praise him and then send him right back to his playmate. This way he'll learn he must come when called, but that it doesn't always mean the end of his fun. Keep other training sessions short - no more than 10 minutes at a time - and always end the session with something your dog does well (like a sit) and if you feel you are getting frustrated - stop! Just curious - what did your trainer do that was horrible? |

well.... let me give you a few examples!!!!
for one thing, he said i asked him how to stop the dog from barking at the door when people walk by, and he said that i should tape up all the windows and doors so he can't see them!!! how is he suppose to learn ?! I just don't think that is right at all, now i learnt ( from this wonder website and its people) that its normal for him to do that, i let him bark once or twice then i call him and he comes to me!! i heard that dogs after 2 years of age are '' better'' dogs-- what do you think they mean by that?! like how do they aged with age ?!

As for dogs becoming better as they get older - well, some may calm down as they leave the puppy stage, but they still need training, consistancy and exercise. Training is a must - for any size or breed dog. Your dog needn't win obedience competitions, but should certainly understand and obey basic commands - sit, stay, down, heel...- and have good manners. |

i just went to the dollar store.. its a new one ... ITS AWESOME!! i think i bought rex 11 dollars worth of toys .. lol.. and i bought a long lead, so everytime we are playin in the backyard, and he doesn't come, i will pull him in.. i tired it about 5 minutes ago, i would call him, he would look, but he wouldn't come, so i pull the leash a little bit, and he came, he just needed a push... why is that !? lol.. if he knows that he should come-- why doesn't he.. hahah... kid i guess!!
and i bought him a huge string rope, that he wont chew very fast

That sounds like what my trainer told us to do - use a long lead, and make it fun! I will keep you posted on anything else she tells us about "come"....since Brick is having such issues too!!! I made a longer reply in my Update on Brick post, I guess I should have saved it for here!!! I bought a 100 foot nylon clothesline to train with, and its great, although all that rope is hard to manage, but its ok!! 50 feet might have been sufficient!!! LOL (Oh well, I am extreme eh??) Good luck!!!

I have brand new rollerblades, never been worn!!! I think Brick would take me for a ride too!!! LOL And, it is illegal here - $150 fine if you are caught rollerblading or biking with your dog on a leash!!

illegal?? that's odd. people do it all the time here in Toronto. They even sell special harnesses for it at pet stores and sporting stores.
