paw pads question

yesterday Arch managed to rip one of his pads playing outside
It didn't bleed, I cleaned it with Epsom salt, put on antibiotic cream and wrapped it. (he is such a good boy). He left the bandage alone all night and this morning.
I changed the bandage this morning, also to take a look at it, it looks clean, not bleeding and he is not limping on it.

I am under the impression that I can take him for small walk as long as it's covered

my question is

how long would it take for it to heal??
how long to keep the bandage on??

and

What happens to the "flap" does it "glue back together or does it fall off??

If the flap has lost it's blood supply in the tear, it will eventually dry up and fall off. If the tissue is still pretty much intact, it will heal. Does it look pink underneath the pad?

I know we've had pad slices in the past, but for the life of me I can't remember how long it takes them to heal

, it looks mostly black maybe a tinge of pink on the pad itself,
I will look beneath the flap when I change the bandage at lunch... both are moist ( the flap and the pad, could be the cream I put on )

Iggy did the same thing about 1 month ago Breeze...it hadn't got to the stage of falling off yet, but when he went to be groomed, the groomer noticed it and her partner who is an eqine Vet cut it off.

Now a pic of the handsome boy would be in order

Once the skin under the slice has dried up a bit and toughens up, you can just let it heal without bandaging.

I kept a laced up baby sock (dollar store) on Brina's for 10 days, but only when outside. I put padding inside it to cushion the pad

wouldn't the bandage keep it moist so it doesn't dry up??

should I keep putting antibiotic cream on it??

I'd use the cream for a few days. You're waiting for the cut surface to heal a bit--it'll do that even if it's moist with the cream. Melinda's sock idea would probably be better than a bandage because it'll let it breathe a bit. And if he doesn't chew or lick at it, keep the sock off when you're inside. Once there's a new layer of skin over the wound, you can discontinue to cream.

I don't know if the groomer will know if it is sufficiently healed to cut it off Breeze, it was a Vet who did Iggy's.....sticking with Hazel's idea is probably better, let it take it's course....I have an antibiotic powder which dries as opposed to keeping things wet, I don't know that it is better though.

I just stuffed it with batting and bought the smallest socks they had, threaded a ribbon around the top cuff of the sock and tied it. It fit her perfectly and it never moved because it filled the foot part

and if there is any infection inside the cut, its sealed in, usually they leave flaps "open" to air dry and allow the infection to clear up (air)

it was acrylic, the padding covered the "flap" so I didn't worry about it "breathing" and it stretched better than cotton

got the baby socks
brown ones
green ones
and grey/ red ones
Arch told me before I left no PINK ones!!!!

when I went to change it I noticed that the flap was a bit hard and not flat on the pad even though when I wrapped it this afternoon it was lying flat on the pad

He is not limping on it and when I cleaned it he didn't make a sound ( no crying or pulling away

but when I take the sock off he wants to go after it all the time..

I put some extra padding in the sock and taped the top with vet wrap.( had some in the house but I didn't have matching colors to go with the socks )
I tried the cord/ribbon but all he did was chewed the cord Silly Arch!!!!!

tomorrow I'll take him for a small walk with the sock on and see how he does.

We had the same thing happen to our dog a few years ago- the vet wrapped it up and he basically stayed off it for a while with only short walks for poops. The trouble is they can't use stitches as the pad would tend to flake apart with it mostly being callus. Anyway- we kept it wrapped, and dry (with one doggie boot over the wrapping when we went out) and it ended up healing really really well with no scar. Just keep it clean mostly!

I've been dealing with a dog with an injured tail and the vets have applied manuka honey which has some amazing healing properties. Might be worth a try if it's an open would.

Awww, poor Archer .... give him a cookie please .

Riley and Sam have both had some significant cuts over the past few years as they go tearing through the bushes all the time. Sam especially has much more sensitive feet.

I still walk them when they are injured unless they seem to be really uncomfortable. I have a few dog booties around and I just put one of those on to prevent any further damage while walking and I keep them on leash.

Soaking the foot in salt water seems to be the best thing for my guys to help heal. The first few days I will usually soak twice per day and maybe a quick cleaning soak if they have been outside. I will use a sock or bootie if they are bothering it otherwise I pretty much just let it be.

Hope he heals quick .

awe! My Suzie is a maniac when we go to the dog park (which, now isn't too often for this reason) and she has torn the pads on her feet a few times. We have settled for putting booties on her if we do go to play fetch, but she is too happy to run like a greyhound to worry about her feet - once, she tore her carpal pad half off, which was a LONG healing process.

Basically, I just wash the dirt out (saline solution works great), put antiobiotic cream on, give it a simple wrap and keep an eye on it. Like others have said, the flap will fall off, and the area will toughen up.

Poor guy! he will feel better soon enough
