Older Dalmatian - Excessive Thirst & other questions
Does anyone have any insight into old age issues with this breed? Our 12 yr old female Dalmatian, Lucky always seems to be thirsty and drinks and drinks and drinks. Additionally, she seems to have gone deaf in the last 6 months or so, sleeps most of the time, seems a bit confused at times and sometimes, her back legs will just go out from under her for no apparent reason. She has been to her vet who has checked her ears, hips, and everything else, and says her symptons are indicative of the aging process. She does not appear to be in any pain; any feedback or comments would be appreciated.
thanks in advance! |

Does she have excessive urination along with the thirst, or just seems to be drinking alot? This would be important to note... Has she had bloodwork done to rule out diabetes? A common cause of excessive thirst in older dogs is renal failure, thyroid probs, and some cancers....I'd go back to the vets if you haven't ruled out these things.

Has your dog had blood tests? Excessive thirst in older dogs is very often an indication of diabetes which needs to be diagnosed and treated.
The deafness and confusion (senility) does often go with age. |

I think your vet is being negligent in not running a CBC (blood panel) on her. This is inexpensive and will let you know kidney, liver & overall functioning, indicate presence of some cancers, etc. All for about $40.00 USD.
This is pretty standard care for any older dog.
