Dog shoes
Hi all,
Can anyone recommend me a good pair of dog shoes/boots? The ones I have now tends to slip off while my dog is walking/running. Are their alternatives to wearing shoes/boots for protecting paws from exposure to salt and snow? |

There are a couple of pet stores where I live that actually carry the cutest thing... there are little doggie "sneaker booties". They have a hard sole like a pair of sneakers and actually zip up the front, so they don't slip off like the booties that just have a velcro strap around the ankle. The ones I was looking at actually had lights in the sole so when they walk, they blink
Hubby would kill me though! He wouldn't want me making our boys look like sissies

I swear by Muttluks - you can find them in some local stores, or you can order online. They haven't come off once with Loki

As for alternatives, yes. First, keep the fur between the pads well trimmed to avoid snow and salt accumulation between the pads. If your dog spends a lot of time on rough surfaces like pavement or gravel, you may not have to do this. Second, before going out, apply a lanolin based cream liberally on the pads and the fur between the pads. The lanolin is hydrophobic (repels water) and forms a barrier that takes a long time to wear off. It's also a great conditioner and prevents the pads from becomming dry and cracked. The best lanolin product I've found is actually nipple cream for nursing mothers (it can be ingested with no harmful side effects) and you can find that at your local pharmacy. After you come home, check the fur between the pads and manually remove any accumulated snow or salt. Depending on the weather, you can re-apply a thin layer of the lanolin to condition the pads.
