A question about squash..

I got some butternut squash baby food for Ethel and her babies last night, and luckily she ate some of it without me even having to mix it in her food

I have a couple of questions though..

The kittens don't have diarrhea per se, their poops are formed, but soft. Should I be giving it to them too? I feed the whole lot of them two 5.5 oz cans of kitten food twice a day - and they eat out of two big bowls, so how do I give it to them? I just scattered some all around the bowl so they each got some last night..

Is it detrimental if they get too much?

When should I expect results?

Should I stop giving it if their poops become firm?

I dropped off a stool sample for Ethel at the vets this morning, so we'll see if she has any parasites, but the good news is that her belly didn't seem as distended today as it was yesterday

Thanks Jim - looks like I got overzealous when I bought the jars yesterday - I bought two, and I guess I won't need that much .. Oh well, at least they were only $.57

If I feed Ethel twice a day, should I only give her 1/4 tsp twice a day, or does she need more?

If the kittens poop looks good then it's not necessary, I can't see it being detrimental in any way if they have some - it balances out the water level in the bowels so if they have diarreah it will firm them up abit & if they are consipated it will provide enough moisture to bring it back to the right amount.

1/4 tsp twice a day is a good place to start, you can always increase/decrease as necessary. My grrl gets 1/4 tsp twice a day & is a good amount for her.

You can also freeze portion sizes in ice cube trays & then dump them into a freezer bag for when you need them. Leaving the squash in the jar in the fridge it will go bad w/in a few days, so by freezing you can save the remainder. Then you can just warm it abit in the food (place the dish in hot water in the sink) before serving.

The unopened jar should have a best before date, if you don't think you will use it up before that date you can always either return it or open it a couple of days before the date & freeze it.

Thanks growler! The second jar doesn't expire until April 2010 - so I think I should be good

That's some well keeping squash!

Forgot to mention you can just mix it in well to the food that way they will all get some instead of one kitten passing it over & not eating it.

Also should start to work within a couple of days of feeding.

Yeah the stuff keeps great if unopened & you can always add it to home made soup or something to use it if you want to use it - it is just squash afterall

Unhappy Things are still runny and stinky

Well, I've been giving Ethel the squash for a few days now, and while sometimes her poop seems a little firmer, it's still pretty runny..

Her stool sample has been analysed and she doesn't have any parasites.

The vet recommended their Hills IB food

I've got her on a decent food (Performatrin Ultra canned Kitten Food) - it's grain free with no by-products. I add quite a bit of water to her food to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated.

Anyone have any other diarrhea tips? If not for the runniness, she seems like a perfectly healthy kitty!
