Do fans help cool cats and dogs

I always thought fans do nothing to help cool a cat or dog because their bodies don't sweat, just the feet bottoms. I looked up on a couple of sites, and some of them claim pets benefit from fans, it cools them. What do you think?

I've read fans only work to cool us if we are sitting in the path of air they stir up. It's the evaporation of sweat that cools us and air flow enhances that. Something my OH does not believe, he has a fan running on the dining room floor right now. I notice the dog and cats don't seem to like to be in the path of the stirred up air. I guess fans are worth a try but wonder if your pets would avoid them like ours do.

I would definitely think that fans cool dogs in the same way they cool humans even though dogs and humans sweat/pant differently. I would think that the air rushing around the feet and mouth of a dog would relieve the heat somewhat.

In his last year, my 17 year old dog Mickey loved having the fan directed at him when he laid down to sleep. He would pant a lot in the summer heat and I found that with the fan, he fell asleep faster, he was more comfortable and he didn't wake up panting. The fan was very noisy but Mickey wasn't bothered by it; he was deaf. My other dog and 2 cats avoided the fan but it did help Mickey.

It seems like dogs like a fan more than cats, none of my cats will get near one. Maybe they benefit more in someway.

Some of my cats really enjoy laying belly-up in the air the fan provides, others don't bother with it. What they all like, are the wet towels I put on the floor for them to lay on and cool off.
