Moose's Mom
Hello. I am new here. I found this site looking for information on Hill's J/D. I read several posts and hope someone can advise me.
My female 12 year old German Shepherd mix has arthritis in her hips. The vet said it is not hip dysplacia. She recommended Hill's j/d. But it is very expensive and the posts I read seem to not be in favor of it. We have been feeding her Beneful for seniors, plus she gets Resorces Joint Support Plus, Pain plus and Incontinence. I add Catalyst Omega 3 soft shews to her fool plus some of Purina's Moinst and meaty and fat free chicken broth. Do I need to change the food to the more expensive Hill's J/D? |

Welcome to the forum, jandas .
If it were me, I'd be feeding neither . The two first ingredients in each are both corn and chicken by-product meal...neither of which are beneficial to dogs. Do you have small mom & pop type pet supply stores near you? Personally, I like a corn and grain-free food like Orijen (stores that carry it in Arizona are: http://www.orijen.ca/orijen/storeLocator/Arizona.aspx ) but there are other high quality brands as well that you can look into. They are almost as pricey as the Hill's but without fillers so you end up feeding a smaller amount. Here's a wonderful website that will teach you what to look for, and what to stay away from, in dog foods. Click on the topics in the left hand column under "Commercial Dry Foods." http://www.dogfoodproject.com/ When we had our last senior, we supplemented with Wild Salmon Oil and Vitamin E. We also gave Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM. Has your vet mentioned Cartrophen injections? They aren't expensive (not here anyways) and we found it to make an enormous difference. http://www.arthritis.au.com/DMOAD.2006.FINAL.pdf Think we can get to see a photo of Moose (I love her name )?
