What do you see?

Hi! We're new to the forum. Meet our puppy, Caboose! He's very charming and true to his age, has two modes: Full-Speed Ahead and Comatose.

I'm wondering what breeds you guys think went into this mix because everyone we meet seems to have a different opinion. One woman was adamant that there is Stafordshire Terrier somewhere in his parentage but I don't know... the head shape doesn't seem right to me. Of course, I'm no expert. Anyway, he is currently about 30lbs at 13 weeks old (born in early November). For the record, we were told that mom is an Australian Cattle dog (and two of his littermates did have the black/tan/white/eye patch colouring consistent with that breed) and dad is a mastiff. One WEIRD thing - he has webbing on his toes, which, as far as I know, isn't a trait of either of those breeds.

Here are a few photos. Our son is 13 months old and about average height (approx 30"), so you can kind of use him as a frame of reference .

First of all, Caboose is adorable

The "webbed" paws, from what I understand come from labs. But futher investigation does not mean it has to be a lab.

Oh yeah, he's got adorable in spades... and he knows it! Good thing for us he's not our first dog or we'd be letting that face get away with too much. As it is, he's doing pretty well with training and we're working on socializing with both dogs and people, which will be easier once he gets his last set of boosters in a few weeks.

The wrinkles and ears in the second shot made me think Shar Pei cross. He is gorgeous though whatever he is.

That is a pretty big puppy at 13 weeks and 30 lbs.
I see staffie X looking at him sideways. He definately has mastiff.
Hard to say as puppies features evolve. You may have a better idea when he grows out of his baby face.

Whatever his mix, he is absolutely gorgeous.

Definitely some mastiff in there, he looks like staffy from the face but that could simply be from mastiff too depending what the mix is. Webbing doesn't mean much in my opinion, my dachshund has webbed feet for what it is worth.
He is cute whatever the mix is, it will be interesting to see what he looks like full grown!

Thanks for the input! According to our vet, he may only be 60lbs or so full grown. I'm thinking closer to 80 but that might be wishful thinking. I love big dogs!

Caboose is definitely going to be a big boy when he grows up! He's absolutely gorgeous.

As for webbed feet, they are generally the characteristic of water dogs, eg. Spaniels, Setters and Labs and generally go with bigger feet in proportion to body size. However, any breed can have webbed feet in individuals, even if it's not a general breed characteristic. As with humans, all it takes is for 2 recessive genes to combine.

When he's all grown up, hope you'll post a photo. Sure would like to see how Caboose turns out.

I see Mastiff and maybe Shar-Pei, but his head/face is too narrow for either of these breeds (not to mention no jowls), so there's definitely something else...

Maybe lab & Mastiff?

Hope to see more pics as he matures! He's definitely adorable

Apparently you can get your dog's dna test done and learn every breed in your dog. I have no idea how you would know if this stuff is on the up and up. I am sure there are some fraudulant ones out there so look around. Here is one example : http://www.dnamydog.com which is in Toronto I think. Would definately be interesting.

For sure some type of Mastiff as a primary breed, because of how much taller his rear end is and the line of his back, also how his legs are angled. Secondary I would guess some type of pitty breed. Despite the wrinkles I don't see any shar pei at all, Mastiff pups look wrinkly just like that when they're young. I'm thinking pit partially because of the red colour (although it could come from a Mastiff, ie French) but also the snout, nose, and the way his eyes sit reminds me of a pitty.

Check out this wrinkly corso pup:
