Are Cats or Dogs More Popular Today?
I have read that in North American homes, cats now outnumber dogs as a household pet.
As cats are much easier to care for - can be left at home while their people are off at work, dont have the space and excerise requirements of dogs, this isnt really suprising in our busy world today. Plus many residences are permitted cats only due to tenancy requirments Still, it "seems" like dogs would be the preferred number one household pet even so. Many petlovers seek out the unique and special qualites of both feline and canines as animal companions. Others have a preference for just one, and the wonderful qualites that makes them so uniquely different from each other. (non petovers of course dont see the "point" in either). NOT considering choosing between your current pets - an impossible task - but if you had no pets, and could only choose one type for your animal companion ( multiples if desired).. which would you choose? I'd find this a VERY tough call. as many would. Glad I dont "have" to decide other than hypothetically. As the bond between dog and their humans is unlike any other... I was at first going to say I would choose a dog. But.. ultimately, I believe I am more of a "cat person" by nature, that would be my choice. I could see myself keeping four or five cats, but that many dogs? Here is a link to this topic, though its a British study. Some interesting stats. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/1965499.stm |

I prefer dogs, cats are too independent for me. I have 2 cats and neither one care less about me unless their dish is empty or THEY want to cuddle. At least with my dog Tucker if you want a hug he is there. I guess I could hug my lizard but he is prickley and the 3 fish too slimey. Really I love all animals, I have even had rabbits, birds and hamsters. But dogs rule for me.

I love both!! but most of my cats are just like dogs, they greet me at the door, they come running when I get out of bed, and they come when I call, 2 even play fetch with me!!
Cats differ in personality as much as people do, no 2 are alike in my opinion, thats why I can never understand when people say "I hate cats" how can you hate them all?? i say, you have never even met them all!

I have had cats all of my adult life and lots during childhood til my mother decided she was alergic,no bitterness there, haha , but Rocky is the first dog Ive had for a forever situation. In the last two years I lost all three of my cats to old age, I got them all around twenty years ago. When they started to go it was terrible loss. That being said, I now only have a dog and I cant imagine ever having to live without one. As much as I love all animals, and believe me my daughter has brought home stray everythings, even rats, of which I am not a fan, but when I felt she was neglecting them, I still paid them lots of attention! I still think that they were all wonderful, but the bonding between a dog and a person to me is different. Its just much more reponsive and constant, II dont know what it is but for me the relationship with my dog is different. Maybe it is partially the fact that they do require so much more from you and there seem to be so many more emotional issues that are more like children than cats who seem so much more independent. I am actually afraid of the strength of the bond I have with this dog-its scary to care so much-especially in these times when you dont know how to keep your dog safe from the poweres that be!!!

Why not post a "if you had neither, and could only choose one, which would you choose" poll. I think it would be very interesting!
I would choose the dog in an instant (no offense to the cat people here). They have my heart  . My son would like me to tell you that he'd pick the cat, hands down! |

Cactus Flower.. I was going to do this... and thought it would interesting.
I dont know how to make a poll.. so I did the post instead. If you or someone else would care to make one with the guideline you suggested... I'd love to see the results! And thinking more of this, if I could only have just ONE single pet - I'd pick a dog. |

I like cats. Most cats.. Ok, maybe some cats.... But I have chosen to spend my life with dogs. In total I have spent 36 days so far without a dog. My boyfriend is very allergic to dogs and I have 2 anyway. I have told him time and time again, "PLEASE, don't make me ever choose between you and the dogs."
I didn't have a lot of parental care growing up but my doggies did the best they could to fill the role. They protected me, they made me feel better when I was sad and most importantly they gave me a reason to wake up in the morning. I owe so much to my dogs and I plan to repay them as much as I can. As for 4 cats vs 4 dogs... A home with 4 dogs would be incredible. Maybe I'm young, maybe I just don't like kids much, but I'd rather a house full of the pitter-patter of paws than the same of little feet. I could live a million years without a child, but maybe a week without a dog. What was the question again? Dogs vs whom? |

Wow tough question I love cats and would like to have one again someday but, if I had to pick which pet it would be dogs hands dog. I enjoy walking my dogs and spending time with them, most cats don't like going for walks and would rather be alone.

I prefer dogs, although I've always had a bunch of cats (must be that "Sucker" sign over my door)
Not one of them was anything approaching "independant"! If I could have neither cats nor dogs, I would want RATS - lots of RATS!! |

I choose dogs. I'm kinda biased though because I'm deathly allergic to cats so I really don't have an option.

ok, I figured out the poll..lol...
Please vote and we will see the final tally! I'm sure that most everyone here has a real affection and admiration for both cats and dogs, and other critters - whether we have them as our own companions or not. But - looking over these replies - looks like dogs are still the "top dog" in pets! |

Two to one ratio around here. Still in a busy world cats would have to rule.
Those two dogs take up a lot of time (I knew that coming in) and have been far more expensive. I wouldn't trade them for the world but some days it would be nice to come home and just sit on the couch with the cat instead of changing into walking clothes and heading out.

Like Raingirl, I'm also pretty allergic to cats, so I would definetly chose a dog. I love cats, but I associate them with a runny nose, lots of sneezing and swollen itchy eyes... ...not fun....

I chose
I chose a dog first. I think it's because growing up I really wanted a dog but my parents would never get one as they felt it would tie us down too much. They probably should have got one as now I constantly have a house full of critters.

I love all animals and have had many different types, but if I had to choose just one, I would have to say a dog. I love walking my dogs and doing things that you just can't with other animals like jogging, rollerblading, bike riding and swimming.

Prin and Goldenblaze, I never had kids. I guess my nurturing instincts were fullfilled with my pets. I don't regret not having children, but wish my pets could have had longer lives. When you lose them, it's like losing your child. I know lots of people object to that statement, but when your pet is your child-substitute, that's the way it is. I don't dislike kids, Just never had the desire for any. I can't imagine not having a pet in my life though. Notice how I say "pet" though - not wanting to choose between cat and dog even after I voted.

I pick dogs
Although I do like cats and have owned a few in my life, I would have to pick a dog. I can't imagine being without one. I know that lots of people think dogs only tie you down but my idea of the perfect retirement would be me, my hubby and two newfs on a good sized sailboat - chasing sunsets for the rest of our lives!

I am certainly a dog person but to be fair I've never lived with a cat. But for my whole life I had dogs and honestly I don't know what i would have done without them growing up. I thank god for the companionship they give people. Now Capone I can tell has helped my stepdaughter greatly in dealing with her ADD. I have seen a change since we got him and now she has a special friend that she can confide in and thatw ill always be there for her just like me.

I know the stats say cats are more popular in Canada by a small margin (52%) - but am unsure if the US stats. Of course , I love both but cats are preferred for me anyway.

That is definately a very good question. I've never really thought that much about it because throughout my life I've been fortunate to have both cats and dogs and I've loved every single one of them. *S*
But if I really had to choose then I would choose a dog because of the love and loyalty they return to you for each and every good thing you do for them. I've had cats around me all my life and they r truly wonderful animals but most (with the exception of a couple) r really independant and do things more for their own benefit. I will always love and care for both dogs and cats for as long as I am able to. The more love and attention you give to them, the more you receive in return. You wouldn't believe how many tough times my pets have carried me through in my life. |

Very hard to choose.
When I left home all I wanted was a cat. Very easy to take care. Now that we have both my heart is with my dog, but if we could get a rex it could be a different story. I just can't choose. |

I can't decide which I would prefer. I have always had cats. Daisy is my first dog in a very long time, so I'm lovin' being a dog mom. Dogs and cats are so different and I love them both for different reasons.
