Recommend vet for neutering
Hi,
My 6 month old german shepherd is ready to be neutered. Can anyone recommend a good vet in the Tri-Cities area? Ideally I'm looking for a vet who can do the least invasive surgery. Thanks! |

Neutering a male dog is not invasive surgery . You can call as many vets in your area and ask what's involved with a neuter and what's included in the cost. Ideally you'll be looking for pre-op blood tests, intubation during surgery, antibiotics/painkillers for post surgery, and removal of stitches (depending on the material used) at a follow-up appointment to be all included in the price.

If cost is an issue, be sure to call around to local animal shelters to ask about their services!
Neutering a male dog is a bit more invasive then a male cat. But, it's still a rather simple procedure. I can tell you get it done NOW before the dog gets any bigger! Not only will it cost more money for more weight, anesthesia is also trickier the bigger the animal gets. Usually pre-op blood work is a waste of money unless your dog has any suspected conditions. Neutering takes about 10-20 minutes depending on how skilled the veterinarian is. Intubation is a plus for sure. Where I work we normally do not intubate male dogs unless the veterinarian asks for it.. and the vet I normally work with is extremely fast. Antibiotics usually aren't part of a regular spay/neuter.. only if the animal has any complications or previously known conditions. A shot of penicillin is done at alot of clinics and that's okay, but I don't really agree with sending the animal home on any kind of antibiotic. For pain medications, male animals generally don't need them but you can always ask for a one time shot of something like metacam. Another common medicine sent home is tramadol. Those are usually in pill form for like 2-3 days afterwards. I work in a low cost clinic and it's absolutely high quality but it's of course, still not a private vet hospital with fancy gadgets (and high prices!). good luck! Spaying and neutering is one of the kindest things you can do for your pet and the general public |

i think it's way too early to get a 6mth old dog neutered.
earlier neutering can cause more health problems later on http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongT...uterInDogs.pdf http://www.caninesports.com/SpayNeuter.html |
