Dash's Upset Stomach

Hey all

Just wanted to ask around and see if anyone elses pooch has a similar problem. Dash has had diarrhea all day today and I feel awful for him. If it's still present in the morning we are going to the vet again but he seems to get this problem often. I am not sure if he has a very sensitive stomach or if he could possibly have some sort of bowel disease (I believe these exist for dogs as well). When I put my head next to his stomach it makes a loud gurgling, squishing noise I feel so bad for him. Any similar stories?

Thanks

My boy used to get that noise quite often. I found giving him a spoon of yogurt on his food would sometimes set his tummy at ease but the diarrea was a problem until I found a good qaulity food that worked well for him.

Have you tried giving him some pumpkin for the runs? it has to be the pure pumpkin not pie filling. Because I buy it in a can there is always some left over so I place it in ice cub trays and it makes it much easier for next time and your not wasting it.

You could also try to fast him or give him rice with boiled beef?

I hope Dash feels better soon.

We've had very good luck with probiotic. We get capsules pretty cheaply at WalMart and sprinkle one capsule over four dinner bowls. If someone is on antibiotics, they get a little extra. It's taken care of most of the gurgly tummy/diarrhea problems we used to get at certain times of the year.

Does he seem to react badly to certain proteins?

My boy, Connor, gets that tummy noise sometimes. He's always had a fairly sensitive stomach, so we watch what we're giving him and feed a high quality food. What's your Dash eating these days?

If he gets the diarrhea, I try to fast him for a half day or so until the pooping has pretty much stopped, then give him a meal of rice and boiled chicken. I will also give him some of the cooled broth (the water I cooked the chicken in, no salt, no spices) too, just to make sure he's not getting to dehydrated. I've never tried the pumpkin like Winston suggested, but I think it's a fairly common remedy.

Now, my girl had a really bad case of diarrhea once and it was not normal for her, plus she was acting really lethargic and she has many other health issues, so I brought her to the vet and she had a high temperature, etc. They gave her some medicine and FortiFlora which cleared her right up. I think she must have had a bug or something.

I guess it depends on how your guy is acting. If you're worried, a trip to the vet can't hurt. I just rely on my gut instincts and monitor the situation whenever they're out of sorts.

Good luck and I hope Dash feels better soon!

Oh, and the FortiFlora is a fairly cheap probiotic that you can get at the vet. Might work on it's own to help the diarrhea, honestly.

Thanks guys! It's looking a bit better today so I may hold off on the vet and see if throughout the day it keeps progressing. I may try some pumpkin as well thank you for those suggestions!
