Eye discharge in dogs - Answered by Dr. Van Lienden
Im just wondering how much eye gukies is cause for a concern. (Boxer mix)
There is no greenish color or anything out of the ordinary, just Kita gets little slime lines in the mornin..... I just dismiss it as normal for her mix, and wipe it away, but should I maybe have a bit more concern?

I would say it is normal, as long as it don't look like infection discharge
My friend has a Cavalier King Charles, whose eyes are a lot like a boxers, and he has really yucky eyes in the morning. But it is just normal eye gook.

I'd only be concerned if there is a slight yellow or green tinge to it - which can indicate infection.

Cider gets mild goopies, occasional little tear stains. With this doggie cold she has though when it was at it's worst the goopies were still clearish/ white, but the tear stains flowed all the way to her mouth.. If you wiped them down they'd dry off and in hours they were all back. Wasn't a cause for concern, but it was unusual for us.

Yeah, depends I think on the droopiness of the eyelid... More open = more dirt = more eye goop.... As long as it isn't green or yellow.

Some eye discharge is within normal. Environmental factors, such as cigarette smoke, dust, cleaning solution/paint fumes/etc. can all trigger a reaction--and usually at lower levels than would stimulate tearing in human beings. I would be concerned if the actual globe (the eye ball) were red, the cornea was hazy, or if there was evidence of upper respiratory symptoms, such as coughing/sneezing. If none of these are present, then I would not be
concerned. Dr. Van Lienden Dr. Raymond Van Lienden DVM The Animal Clinic of Clifton 12702 Chapel Road, Clifton Virginia, U.S.A. 20124 703-802-0490 |

Hmmmm Help?!
Jackson is a 2 year old springer. Sweetest lil thing on 4 legs but lately there have been som concern. With the onset of summer Jackson's eyes are really goopy allll the time. You clean away the goo and 5 mins later you are doing it again. It's not discoloured ( yellow or green ) with signs of infection but I did notice his eyes have started to cloud a little bit. He also is suddenly barking allll the time at any little noise and even barks at dad. I also noticed if we are playing a game with him and he is far away he will move closer to see what we are saying. A sign of cataracts??? Or maybe just seasonal alergies?
On another note just a few days ago he started having the 'poops' and still is. He never has accidents in the house but suddenly is going several times a day and cannot hold it. There has been no significant changes in his diet but we did take him swimming a day or so before, could it have been something in the water? I know it's alot to sift through but I am growing more concerned and am looking for some feedback. Thanks |

Sounds like vet time, 2canadian4i! Only a vet will be able to tell you if Jackson's eye goop is related to allergies or something more serious. And the diarrhea, if it's continued for a few days, also needs attention. Sounds like he could well have picked something up from the water. If you can get a fecal sample from him before you go to the vet, it will save a little time on the diagnosis.
Hope Jackson's better soon!

My 8 year old springer Chum's eyes seem to be a lot more goopy this year for some reason. He had a mild infection that was treated with drops earlier this spring. The infection has cleared up but his eyes are now a little more goopy than they were previously. He also has a slight cloudiness (has ever since I got him 6 years ago) the vet says he doesn't have cataracts and as far as I can tell his vision is fine. Don't ya just gotta love Springers??

I am curious if your dog does have red eyes and haivng more excessive eye goop than usual (that isnt green or yellow) what might that indicate? My beagle is experiencing this. We have moved recently to a more dusty and smoky environment too though so this could be it. I did not notice the whites of her eyes being brownish reddish before since her pupils are so large anyway but they could have been. What kind of serious conditions might this be a sign of? thanks for your help. |
