Cat soon to be spayed

My cat will be spayed next week. What can I do to sooth her when she arrives home? She will have a hernia repaired at the same time. Will the vet give her pain killers or something to help her sleep?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Val

Pain meds are not usually given after a spay, but since your cat had two procedures, you might ask the vet about this.

Keep her quiet when she comes home, and try to keep her in a room where she cannot do any jumping. She will probably be very tired and lethargic and want to sleep. This is normal.

Offer a little food and water, but don't be alarmed if she doesn't want them right away. She may also be constipated for a few days as a result of the anesthesia.

Check her incision often to make sure it's not red, hot or swollen and to make sure she has not been biting or licking excessively at the stitches. If she tries to remove them, you may need to get her an E-collar.

Most cats recover swiftly and uneventfully from spays!
