Seed exchange

Just FYI, if anyone is interested.

A few years back we transplanted some wild growing purple Iris from our property to our front garden beds. Two years ago I got them to make seeds. Last spring 2007 I figured out how to make them sprout and start growing. They all survived the summer and grew a lot outside. They will take approx 3 years to bloom - that's the only downer about Iris seeds. lol

This past fall I harvested more seeds. They grow in a slightly marshy type soil, or can be "trained" to grow in a more dry soil and they adapt quite well, which is what I have done. Although I'd like to dig and create a bog garden this year.

Here's a pic of this type of Iris. Not the best pic but at least you can see the flower type. They bloom in late June, usually pretty close to St Johns Day.

I have more perennial seeds collected from last year and will get a list up. If anyone else is a plant nut like me then maybe we can exchange some seeds to get stuff neither of us have already and just pay postage.

I'm only interested in mainly perennials or bulb flowers. Annuals take up too much time to plant ahead and I prefer to have space for starting veggies instead.

Now, this coming fall 2008 I'll be harvesting and moving some of my big bulb lilies. I'd really like to trade baby bulbs with ones I don't already have, like the Orienpets, Trumpets or Martagons.

Or trade lilies with Iris. I don't have that much Bearded Iris and would like more colors to start in a breeding program soon. I only have purple, white, blue and pink.

About 80% of my flower gardens came from trades and only paid postage. The rest I got perennial seeds on sale and at the Dollar Store. lol I manually dig all my beds. Most of the money spent on the gardens was on soil building materials like peat moss and compost.

OMG they are beautiful!!

To bad, had all the different colour iris's at my trailer (black, purple, pink, yellow) but have since sold the trailer  I would have given the all to you, if I still had it.

My Mom has thousands of seeds, she has lots of gardens, I'll ask if she's interested.

I would so love to participate in this, but I don't think we could exchange across the border.

Sex exchange... no way! Being a woman is way better than being a man.

Besides, I don't see how they walk around with the third leg anyway.

Well technically those wild Iris aren't meant to be grown in a regular garden bed, although I've acclimated them to flower there. Took 2 seasons. They do grow wild on the property in a little hollow that always has water. There's a huge amount of them back there, about 20 feet in diameter but they don't always bloom there. Have even heard ducks nesting back there but could never see the nest because they always flew away when I got within 50 feet.

Those Iris aren't too happy in the flower bed even though they bloomed. But if you think about it, all flowers and plants are interested in is sex. They are driven to grow, reproduce and reproduce some more. Will make a boggy area for them near the house by using empty compost plastic bags to line the bottom of a dug out area, then fill back with good soil and peat moss and lots and lots of water. A good way to recycle those plastic bags that the compost and peat moss comes in! I will transplant some wild growing Marsh Marigolds there as well. They grow everywhere in the area.

I put up my trades list on Gardenweb Canadian Exchange. Got a few trades going already!

Oh the other funky ladder leaf plant in the picture is a Solomon's Seal if anyone was curious. A Sedum plant is underneath that.

Ceara, what are Unk Pink Flower?
I have loads of True Tiger Lilies, will send some bulbils in the fall. I love them, those funky lily leaf beetles give me a run for my money though. I get pleasure from squishing the little *******s. First time I saw them, I thought they are cute, I like red, until I realized what they were doing, now it is all out war. In spring I'm on my hands and knees looking in the soil for the babies.

These pink flowers, behind the Gallardia (Blanket Flower) and orange Asiatic lily. I have no idea what they are. They are a good filler if you have some empty space but sometimes you have to be drastic and yank a few handfuls now and then before the seed forms to make sure they don't take over.

You have the dreaded Lily leaf beetle huh? Haven't seen that here yet.

Neem oil can help you there somewhat as it makes the plant "yucky" to the adult beetles and maybe they wouldn't desire to set up house there. Worth a try I guess.

http://www.rcgardens.ca/factsheets/factsheets/neem.html

Those are the orange lilies getting de-scaled this autumn for propagation. I can't wait to see the bulb size! Been getting some whopper sized bulbs the past few years, about 6" across.

Oh almost forgot

I have some stem bulbils of species lily L. sargentiae that I got from someone from the Yahoo lily group. If they do well when they get big enough, and both of us are still on this forum, I'll send ya some.

I think they are a Trumpet type, and a species, not a cross pollinated or lab created lily.

They are getting the cold stratification now and will be potted up soon.

CearaQC...I have millions of morning glory seeds, some lupin seeds, poopy seeds and I think alium seeds if you would like some. I also have a bearded iris that is yellow and burgundy almost that I can send you.(not right now cause its covered in a foot of snow it is the large one that grows high. I will have to make up a list of some of my perennials..

The morning glorys cover my fence line all the way down the property line so there is about 60 ft of fence..You can imagine home many seeds there are!! I cut a large portion off the fence in the fall because they grow so much that my fence looks like its a foot wide!

That daylily clump is very pretty and no I don't have that type. The iris sounds lovely too, but I read the best time to chop those up is right after flowering, or enough time between replanting and frost so it can settle in. Daylily can be hacked apart almost any time and I've seen the foliage cut just like with iris fans about halfway and they ship fine.

This fall I have some lilies that might need to be separated. Once I see the bulb amounts, I'll type up what I have and you can choose.

Yes Spring, please hurry.

We're going to the Canada Blooms Show in Toronto in march, we went two years ago and thought it was ok but nothing special, but I really need the experience of seeing something growing. My Lantana is still trucking along in the basement, it's looking good.

Ceara - what will I have to do to send you a piece of the Hosta. I have absolutely no idea.

Ziploc baggie with bagged dirt or peat moss, then slip into a padded envelope.

I received some species lily stem bulblets this way from a lily collector and they were just fine.

I always mail out seeds that way too.

Pink flowers as verbena? No idea.

I'll post on a botanical forum and try to get them identified. Should have done that before now but forgot all about it. Will post back here once I have a Latin name.

Here's my latest "gotta have!" plant.

The Eryngium or Sea Holly.

Isn't it funky? Hubby says I can't spend any money so I'm trying to find someone willing to trade. But I guess my current trade list isn't any good.

I currently have a pink and a white lupin. All around the area grows wild pinks and purples.

http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k2...DSCF0013-2.jpg

What colors are yours?

I never let mine go to seed, but if you would like seeds I can collect some for you! Also I find lopping off the seed stalk brings on another bloom flush, albeit smaller.

I don't like to leech off others, so either I'll trade stuff I have, or repay postage costs.

If you have high speed internet, I can send you a couple of garden shows to help pass the rest of winter away.

Yep, like a pea pod. Green at first, then slowly going transparent where you can see good sized black hard seeds.

Ceara - It isn't that your list isn't good. It's that I think a lot of people already have what you have. I know a lot of people who have those plants in this area.
The Sea Holly is a beautiful plant, isn't it? I am hoping to buy some seed next year. Hopefully they will be a little less pricey. Actually, I just got thinking, there is someone on Ebay selling them I think. And the price wasn't bad. I may have to go check that out.
I think your pink flowers are a phlox btw. There are so many different species of phlox it's hard to keep track of all of them.
