My gardens

My daughter came to visit this weekend and has a new cell phone that takes panoramic photos, pretty neet actually.

DH and I built the walls last spring, and in the fall started to plant so my garden is new and not filled out yet.

What a beautiful setting! I love the paths and curves. It looks lovely now and I can just imagine when it fills out!

Wow--you did a great job on the walls! We had some retaining walls put in a few years back when we had the landscaping done. (You'll notice the heavy implication that we didn't do the work ourselves. We're darn unhandy on our best days and downright dangerous on our worst ) You have a lovely lot, too. I want to go sit in that bench under the trees.

The gardens will be spectacular when they're all filled out, but they're beautiful now. (I admire people who can keep a garden thriving, too...another skill lacking at Hazel Run )

Thanks guys, you can't see the flaws in the pictures

That bench is DH and my "seclusion" spot. There is a huge umbrella of maple branches over top and we can't be seen from the road. neighbours can't see the beer bottles in our hand at 2 in the afternoon

Lettin the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin it back in.

It took 6 weekends, and 12 cases of beer, about 20 hours per weekend to do the walls, walkway and stairs all by hand, lugging the gravel to level out the ground, carting the blocks, one in each hand. Because the walls are all curved, each cap had to be cut on both sides as they come retangle, that was the most time consuming.

We framed the house ourselves and DH and a couple retired linemen carried the roof trusses up for most of them. We had to get a crane for the centre ones as they are 12 feet tall with two feet caps that had to go on top and he wasn't tall enough for that.

Saved about $150-200K building it ourselves, and that is after tax money!

Thanks Chris. Yup, except foundation, electrical, drywall, rough plumbing, shingles, and stone work. Electical DH could do, but is easier to get permits if a licensed electrician gets it. Drywall and brick work, should be left to professionals , and the shingles, well it was a wet summer and needed it done ASAP so hired professionals, took them a day and half to have it done.

Next year we tackle the driveway.

I'm sooooo envious!!! You and DH are multifaceted, multitalented people!!!! And only 6 weekends to do the walls, stairs and walkways? It would take us that long just to do the walk... Do you guys watch a lot of HGTV?

We need work done...how do you feel about working under the scrutiny of canine supervisors? If you're okay with it, you're hired!

Now you tell me I could have had it done for cheap

No beer AND construction work DH told me that if you do construction, then beer is a must

DH decided to help the drywallers, was cutting a piece with a utility knife and sliced a huge gash down his index finger, had to go to the hospital for stitches. Still can see the drops of blood on the basement floor in the utility room.

I was using a framing nailer and shot my DH in the back of the arm, funny now, but I had a fit when he pulled the nail out. His buddies that were helping us frame were laughing thier guts out.

We take setters for payment, so you may find you gained some walls and some space on your bed.

DH should have been in construction, not the military, but hey, he will have a good pension when he retires.

Nope...the offer is withdrawn! This sort of stuff we can do on our own and still keep the Pack!

I shouldn't laugh... But that's just so...US!

(You still do better work than we do, though. )
