Two men charged for neutering their own dog (brutally)

Dog neutered with knife. Two men charged.

KENORA, ON, (May 19, 2006)

Terry Johnson, 55, of Fort Frances and James Walter Forrester, 48, of Nelles Township were charged March 21, 2006 under the Criminal Code of Canada with two counts each of wilfully causing pain, and wilfully failing to provide suitable and adequate care to a dog following the attempted neuter using a knife of a one-year-old black Labrador retriever-cross named Tucker.

On October 13, 2005, a veterinarian contacted the Ontario SPCA to report that Tucker had been brought to the clinic by his owner following a failed "do-it-yourself" neuter. Examination revealed a protrusion of tissue from the scrotal cut and a swollen scrotum sensitive to the touch. The veterinarian performed surgery immediately to remove the inflamed and tender tissues.

The owner reported that she had returned from work on the morning of October 13, 2005 and discovered that her dog, Tucker, was not in the home. However, Johnson, one of the accused, had taken the dog for walks before, so she was not overly concerned. She later located Tucker at Johnson's residence and he told her that he and Forrester had "fixed" the dog. The next morning when she took Tucker outside for a walk, he rolled on his back, and she noticed tissue dangling from his scrotum. She took Tucker to the veterinary clinic immediately.

"Improper neutering procedures are dangerous to pets and cause severe pain, suffering and injury," says Ontario SPCA Chief Inspector, Mike Draper. "The most effective way to decrease the number of unwanted puppies and kittens is by spaying and neutering, but it must be performed properly and by a qualified veterinarian. Causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animal are offences under the Criminal Code of Canada and perpetrators will be prosecuted by the Ontario SPCA."

Johnson and Forrester are scheduled to appear in the Fort Frances Court on May 29, 2006.

Grrr. In the long run the vet would have been cheaper! Around here, people still talk about using rubber bands to neuter. Again...where do these people come from?? This is one case I'd love to see "an eye for an eye"

Unfortunately it happens more often than people think...My sister inlaw did it to her dog..."just like they do it to the bulls",she said casually....what ever that means...I still don't talk to her....I suggested that if it were that easy why not castrate your son the samw way, you #@$%^...I still see red when I think about it.
