Hi my name is Shiloh, i'm a black straight back German Shepherd born 11/11/11. Both my parents are police dogs therefore I am a working dog. I am high maintenance when it comes to exercise, and do not like being left home alone, ask my mom, I broke out of two cages, this last one, well she puppy proofed it. Darn ! But I love long walks, playing exercise and EATING, I love carrots, sweet potatoe chews and chicken wings as treats. I also love water. Mom just got me a pool and I can't get enough of it.

Hold on.. in your other post you blamed raw feeding for your dog's aggression and said you weaned him off raw as soon as you got him, yet you give him chicken wings? I hope you don't mean cooked chicken wings or at least that you debone them.. Cooked chicken bones can be deadly to dogs.

These are like freeze dried treats, they are just like a rawhide only made with chicken. Very crunchy and he loves them, trust me, no raw meat. This is like a cookie but in the shape of a chicken wing, more like feather and it's hard.

It's sometimes hard to believe he's a puppy when he's bigger now than my other German Shepherd and strong as an ox. But hilarious because he has no coordination. No worries, i strongly believe he will grow out of his aggression issues, it doesn't come out often, just a few times, he's very gentle when he plays and he does this thing with his ears where they are back and you can tell he's in his submission mode... Up means guarded. You learn as you grow.

He's lovely. Solid black is not common, is it? In GSD? There is a seemingly black girl GSD in our Rally classes but she is a tri-colour because of very small tan markings on her legs and "skirts."

Are you intending any kind of competition or dog sport with Shiloh? Working bred dogs love and need to work. The GSD girl in our class is also starting on tracking and apparently loves it and is doing very well.

ETA: No, I am wrong. Just got back from class and this girl is called a bi-coloured, not a tri. Apparently she started out solid black but developed lighter markings on her legs as she matured. I think she is only 2 or 3 now. Oh, and I forgot, she is doing Rally, Agility and Tracking.

Security in high crime areas. Black with dark
Brown eyes are very hard to see in the dark.
He will only be felt! He has no other color
Except white eyes and teeth. I've always
Wanted a pure black one. Where I get him trained
They will place us in various areas in town and
Make our dogs find us. I think that would
Be impressive. they also have brindle colored GSDs.

Shiloh is just gorgeous!! My neighbour has a beautiful boy named Kobe, who looks just like Shiloh only bigger.. he was the first all black GSD I had ever seen. He was a problem puppy when he adopted him...in fact he destroyed the entire back seat and roofliner of his car when he left him unattended for about 10 minutes while he went in to license him LOL... Needless to say first stop behavior training! He is now a perfectly well behaved boy, who goes for 2 long walks everyday.

Brindle GSDs no longer exist, you are much more likely talking about the Dutch Shepherds, a brindle cousin of the Belgian Shepherd.

Huh. The CKC standard as per Canada's Guide to Dogs website is really helpful on colour. NOT.

Colour
The German Shepherd Dog differs widely in colour. Generally speaking,
strong, rich colours are to be preferred, with definite pigmentation, and
without appearance of a washed-out colour. White dogs are to be
disqualified.

Nobody says straight backs, a working line GSD implies a dog of healthy working confirmation. There are no roach backed working dogs.

Are we mixing up the term "roach back" with "angulation"? I'm curious because my dog's best friend was (she moved away) a GSD from working lines and also from a breeder who sometimes supplied dogs to a local police force. I understood roach to be a hump upwards in the dog's back. Sort of like a roman nose on a horse, if that helps. That's what it seems to be on some GSD websites and it seems to be undesirable whatever the angulation.

The back, I think, is supposed to be straight, whether or not it is level to the ground or angled down towards the tail. I'm trying to remember what my friend said as we discussed these things. I'm pretty sure I've got the term "roach" correctly but I'm not sure about "angulation." Maybe the slope of the back is simply the slope and that affects angulation?

My Lab's breeder does "grading" for several breeds of dogs and basically what it is is measuring the angles of the joints, which are decreed to be a certain ideal measurement by each breed's parent club.

I know we have some breeders here, any of GSD?

Terrie, love the fact that Shiloh has a level topline. Also that he's black. In my younger days I worked at a racing stable where the guard dog was a black GSD named "Cassius". Fantastic dog, so loyal to the owner that one day when she wanted me to pull her long riding boots off for her that dog gave 3 warnings not to touch, escalating as we went. First he sat between us and looked at my face, so I let go of her foot. We wanted to see what he'd do. Next time he jumped up, put feet on each shoulder and gave me the stare again. Final try he took hold of my wrist gently and just held it till I let go of her foot. That was when she sent him off to get his ball, and I quickly yanked the boots off. LOL. Same dog decided he must look after me though when they were not there, so I have been a GSD lover ever since. My sister's have been soooo intelligent too.

Never get another breed. Shiloh has lots
Of love and when he wants to snuggle
makes him being bad all go away.
He is so eager to learn, he can clear park
benches, jump over stacked recycle boxes
We have cement pillars with lights on them
he jumps up on them and waits for his next
command. Next climbing a ladder.

People are afraid of black dogs, my Standard Poodle was black and some people where really afraid of him . And Finlay was a big goofy dog that loved people . I am glad you got a black dog as more black dogs are put to sleep then other dogs. Your dog is handsome! I wanted to get a GS mix dog but my insurance agent would had told the company I used and my premium would had gone up.

I'm no expert but it may be an idea to limit his jumping while he's so young. Terrie. The impact may not be good for growing joints. I'd be asking the breeder or your vet about that. I thought I would never get another guard dog that wasn't an Australian Cattle Dog, but now I'm not so sure. I love this boy here, Archie, who belongs to a friend. The puppy belongs to my sister, and Sally is from working lines like yours. You can't study their faces without knowing how super smart they are, can you? Sally was such a serious looking pup. LOL.

Yes! Large dogs should not be jumping much until their growth plates close which isn't until they are at least 1yr old, even 1.5.
