"Relax, it's just a dog. You can get another one"

Was the officer right or wrong to keep this speeding motorist on the side of the highway?

This officer is a dog hating JERK!!! He should have been more sympathetic, and should not have kept this poor man and his dog waiting for OVER 15 freakin minutes, he was probably happy the dog died!!

I wouldn't have stopped for the police at all.

I'm sure had it been like a person dying in the back and they couldn't have gotten an ambulance in time that the people driving the car would have been heros for rushing them to the emergency room.

omg what an a**hole, he could have simply escorted them to the vet clinic and ticketed them there.

I probably would have stopped, thinking the officer would escort me to the vet, not thinking he/she would be an absolute a$$hole. Hope this publicity gets him fired

Yeah I'd think that too. I guess once the dude was stopped if he tried to get away he would have been shot/tazered. This makes me never want to stop for cops in the event of an emergency knowing that they wouldn't help me if someone was dying in the back seat...

I wouldn't of stopped. Instead, I would of called the nearest police station, acknowledged the officer behind me, told them where I was headed and why. They could charge or fine me at the vets.

The behaviour by that policeman was deplorable!
I agree that the car was speeding and should have been stopped (a policeman can't know why ANY car is speeding). But that policeman showed ZERO compassion for a dying animal. That's just not cool. Any animal loving cop would have likely handled the situation MUCH differently. There should be a police policy for situations like this. More people are animal lovers than not and that policy should reflect some compassion when an animal (regarded by MANY as family members) is dying and needs to get to a hospital. Shame on this cop!

That's a great afterthought Jessi76 and although I won't encourage anyone to do that, personally I think I would have done EXACTLY as you suggested.

That's the right answer . . . . a police escort, at a reasonably safe speed, to vet emergency.

The officer was right to pull them over, since they could have killed a dozen innocent people all by themselves, but, unfortunately, he then fell flat on his face immediately after that . . . and the dog died.

Then his name and face were all over the national news.

The Ontario/Quebec ice storm and Hurricane Katrina should have alerted all public officials/emergency personnel that a distinct sea change has occurred in how the public generally views their pets.

This officer missed the memo.

And will regret it forever

I think you're right, Rick, there is a sea-change, not coming fast enough for me.
