Unhappy Update-Nanook is in the hospital again

The night before we were to leave for holidays Nanook had another seizure. He went 5 weeks without one, then it just came out of nowhere. No signs this time at all. I guess I am feeling blessed that it happened as we were scheduled to board him the following morning. Had we boarded him, he may not have made it.

That was a week ago last Sunday. We took him to the vet the following morning and they kept him for the day. They completed blood serum/titer tests for Neospora/Toxoplasmosis/Crypto. All but the Toxo came back negative and they expect the Toxo to be negative as well. The vet called and said there was no seizure activity and as far as he can tell, Nanook is a bright eyed, happy, healthy puppy except for the seizures and said they were just stumped and ready to call it idiopathic epilepsy. He said the next seizure they would start him on Pheno.

We had a vet visit yesterday (for Thorin-he has bloody diaarhea and is throwing up bile). They rechecked Nanook and the vet was so happy... they think they finally figured out what's going on with the seizures. She had conferred with an internal specialist, went over everything in Nanooks file and determined he still has sterile meningitis. Turns out that he should have been on steroids for minimum 6-8 months with a very gradual weaning. Our vet did not realize that. She has now put him on a 60 mg dose (30 mg 2xdaily) for the first month, then will gradually lower it over the next 5-7 months. We were ecstatic!

We got home last night... he had a seizure. This one was different as in he did not foam at the mouth, it was a hard seizure but the Ictal phase was short compared to normal. He started coughing and drooling everywhere. I went on the internet and searched for coughing/seizures and was horrified. He had all the signs of Pulmonary Edema. We immediately rushed him to the hospital (30 mins away). They checked him and said they wanted to keep him over night. They called about midnight, said he had another seizure and this time vomited. They said his breathing was rapid and labored so they did a chest x-ray. They are worried that he not only may have Pulmonary Edema, but may have also aspirated stomach contents into his lungs. They put him on Lasix, waited 12 hours and did another x-ray with no visible improvement. Gave him another dose of Lasix and will be doing another x-ray. They said now, they aren't sure it's Pulmonary Edema and could be any number of things and want to do a transtracheal flush but are torn. They want to start him on antibiotics "in case" he did aspirate stomach contents or it's pneumonia of some sort but said that would hinder the transtracheal flush results.

We're just so tired. Physically and emotionally. We're not going to put him down unless they say there is nothing else that can be done, but we're struggling to meet the costs at this point. We're up to just over $7,000 and still nothing definitive. They keep telling us there's hope for him, then something else happens. Please forgive the length of the post, I just really needed to vent. Living somewhere you don't know people and have no family makes things alot tougher

Oh, no, Robyn. I know how awful it is to have so much go wrong and not have the answers you need. Hang in there!

Prayers and for the little tyke--and some for Thorin, too! I hope they're both feeling better soon.

And if you need to vent, you go right ahead--we're here for you

Thank you all so much for the support and kind words. Hubby and I can't have kids, so our furkids mean the world to us. Most people that know us think we're nuts and should have let him go when it first started, but we just can't do it, not as long as he still plays and is happy. So not alot of support or understanding for either of us. Just makes it alot tougher.

We talked last night and decided to ask them to do the transtracheal wash prior to giving him an antibiotic. They said if it's just pneumonia or pulmonary edema and he responds to antibiotics then we would be wasting $600-$700. I asked again if it's not what they think (and it hasn't been up to this point, so a reasonable thought on our part) and he doesn't respond then will they still be able to complete the wash. They said yes, but chances are they wouldn't get anything from it
So I told them it didn't make sense to go that route and we would probably not be saving money because they will still charge us for a surgery that may not yield any results if he doesn't respond and may cost us even more to find out what's wrong and possibly cost him his life. So they said if we didn't mind paying for the surgery, it would be a good idea to do it prior to giving the antibiotic and then send the fluids in for culture.

They said the fluid was very "odd" and dirty, and are interested to see what grows. They think it is some kind of bacterial or fungal infection that he may have had this whole time and said it may have been contributing to seizures due to lack of oxygen? You'd think they would have heard something wrong with his breathing in all the exams he's had
He has always panted excessively, coughed and breathes fast. I guess maybe they just attributed it to his being sick overall (round worms, neospora, giardia and meningoencephalitis) and then being on steroids. Who knows. Anyway, at least now they will hopefully find out what's wrong with our baby and be able to treat it

Robyn,how very,very frustrating
I know there is not one person here, who thinks you are crazy for doing all you possibly can to save sweet Nanooks life.
I hope they can come up with a definite diagnosis for the poor little guy,so he can be back to his old self soon
I also hope Thorin is doing better...

Robyn, Sending good thoughts to Nanook. We had a rough year with one of our dogs and, like you, spent huge amounts to try to extend quality of life. So very few people could understand, but she was our baby.

It is so frustrating, trying to figure out what it isn't so you can get a diagnosis of what "it" is and then treat. My best to you. Stay strong.

OMG......this sounds like exactly what we went through a couple yrs ago with our cat. Nobody knew what was going on with our cat, the LittleMushroom. In 2 months, we put her through all kinds of tests, our regular vet, different kinds of specialists, eventually, she had a surgery at OVC and spent a week in the ICU. Every time, when we felt hopeless, a light coming in, and then it disappeared soon after. I just felt like I was in the absolute darkness, didn't know what was the right choice to make. We took out some of our line of credit, we drove her to OVC the night before my final exam. Exhausted physically and mentally, me, my husband and our poor cat. I totally understand how you feel now. Finally, we had to put her down. I couldn't stand seeing her suffering anymore, she used to be a such a happy, cuddly cat but after all of these exams and the surgery, she was terrified of even being picked up. They insert a tube in her chest to make draining the fluid out of her a little easier after the surgery. We buried her in the Ancaster Animal Cemetery. I wish I knew the ending, so I wouldn't put her through this.

I am not telling you what to do, just don't let him suffer too much. Hope someone find out the real cause for his problem soon

Thank you for sharing your story. I sincerely hope that our outcome is better than yours was, and I'm very sorry for your loss. We would never let him suffer. That's the problem we have... some vets have said put him down in the beginning, others have said "What?! You don't need to put him down!" and clinically, he seems perfectly fine except the seizures and now the lung problems. But even with whatever it is in his lungs, he's still happy and playful, has a HUGE appetite, is drinking and acting like a puppy. As long as he seems to be happy and not suffering, we won't even consider putting him down. As for the money, I understand going into your credit line. We have done the same. And maxed our cards, almost depleted our savings as well. I may have to sell my car (at least it's paid off) and buy an older one if we don't have enough equity in our home to refinance, then use the rest for the vet bills. But it's ok, money is made to be spent and you can't take it with you! It does get so frustrating, but regardless of the outcome, it's worth it to us. He will have a happy life being loved for the time he has. He had a bad start and hopefully doesn't remember any of it

Thank you to everyone for the hugs, good vibes and prayers. Nanook is home now afer 2 days in the hospital. One of the vets at our regular clinic said he still thinks Nanook just has idopathic juvenile epilepsy and said he can hear a little something in his lungs, but doesn't sound serious and thinks he's fine. I would LOVE to believe him, but somehow I doubt it. The CSF indicated parasitic infection and/or sterile meningitis and the transtrachael flush resulted in some very nasty fluid they could not identify by sight and not at all what they expected to pull out of him. I think our vet is right in saying (after conferring with the internal specialist) that he still has meningitis and should remain on the steroids for 6-8 months. That also goes along with most of what I've read regarding the treatment and that he should be slowly weaned, not just abruptly stopped on the steroids. Again, guess we will just have to wait and see what happens.

Thank you so much chico! Thorin is doing much, much better! He's on metronidazol, which I don't really like, but it helped him before and seems to be helping again

Now we just need to figure out a diet for his stones. I would have thought a U/D diet, but they have recommended Medi-Cal Weight Management. I so hate the thought of feeding him that. It's so full of fillers and by products. It's just such a crappy diet but I don't know what is in it (or rather what isn't) that will be reduce stone formation. I would love to keep him on the Wellness line. My vet said if they have a vet hotline or would be willing to speak with her, she would be happy to talk to them and see if they have something approriate.

I hope this is it for the poor baby. He has been through a lot in his young life. You are amazing parents for going through it with him. I'm glad Thorin is doing better as well. Keep up the good work with both.

have you thought about supplements for Thorin?? I have heard from some people that this supplement also helps with stones..
this way you could stay on the food you like and maybe the supplements might help..
you can also write to them and ask them

I'm glad he's home again, Robyn! And I hope they get some useful clues from the wash and culture!

Robyn,I am so glad the little guy is home and I bet so are you,a dog/cat can live with seizures,on medication, but if there is something else going on,I hope it's something curable
I know 14+tiny little Poodle gets seizures and has for her whole life,if I remember right she's now about 14yrs old.

I know nothing about dog-food,but like Breeze said, the right supplements might let you feed him the food he's used to,not the crappy Medi-cal.

Chico2, I wish they'd suggested UD because all my dogs want to eat Toby's food and it's kept him free of stones. But maybe a different(huge) breed is better on something else. Robyn, don't be fooled by Nanook's appetite, that's the steroids talking. They'll make him eat, drink and pee a lot. Fingers crossed that they know what's going on soon.

I called and spoke with Wellness. They said they would be happy to talk to my vet, so they are going to call her on Monday. I was a bit surprised by their willingness to help so quickly . I am also taking him to a holistic vet to see if there are also supplements I can give him that may aid the food. Thank you for the suggestions!

I certainly hope so. He has always had a great appetite for food and water, even prior to the steroids. The vet also said he would be very dopey on the pheno for the first 2-4 weeks, but he seems to have adjusted rather quickly. He sleeps a bit more, but he's still his usual, happy, puppy self
Thanks all, and I will keep you posted on the results of the wash
