Unhappy Trying to hang on

I am the mother of a 13 1/2 year old Black Lab. She has been getting a llittle slower in years, but over the past few days she has shown significant deterioration She used to love swimming, it was the best exercise due to the low impact, she swims a few feet now and has to give up. She has labored breathing, vomitted the other day and produced mucus with it. It's understandable that her hips are deteriorating, but it seems that there's more to it than that now. We were just hit directly by Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne and it seems that since Jeanne hit last week she has gotten worse. She was fine and not nervous throughout the whole storm. I know she's old and we're trying to deal with that, but it appears to be more than just hip/lower body arthritis. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? She's been on heartworm so we're pretty sure it's not that. If anyone has a good idea of what could be wrong please let us know. We're desperate, we love her so much. Thanks.

13 1/2 is pretty old for a big dog, but that doesn't mean the end yet. I"m sure you love her very much so I'm wondering if you have taken her to the vet, and what he/she says about this?

Trying to Hang on.

Thanks for the response. We have been trying to get in touch with our vet and others in the area. We are in Jensen Beach, FL and received direct hits from Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne, many business are not operational and a lot of phones are still out. I will give it one more day and have to start looking for vets in the Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties if we can't get service here. Thanks for telling me to not give up yet, I haven't and I don't want to!

No..don't give up just yet. There are many medications (metacam) and supplements (glucosamine) that may help. Ask your vet...and keep us posted.

I have a couple of rottweiler friends in Florida, let me see if I can help you find a vet. I have heard that there are several shelters set up for animals that have been displaced. You might check with them.

Try getting ahold of Good's Homeless Animal Foundation. They seem to have vet resources and may be able to recommend someone.

Thanks, CF.

Thanks so much to everyone! Lavendar Rott, the time you spent looking for resources is much appreciated. Ocean Breeze is our vet and fortunately they went back to operations today. They had roof damage from the first hurricane. Puppy, that's my dog's name, is now on Rimadyl. The doc thinks that her problem is arthritis related and is not ready to discuss any final arrangements, thank GOD!!! Again, it's so great to know that their are so mnny people out there that not only love their own animals so much, but have compassion for other petowners and all animals. Thanks!!!

Well the Rimadyl didn't do much. Now Puppy is really bloated and not getitng around at all. X rays show she has fused vertebrae. The doc gave her a heavy duty pain killer to ease her suffering while the cortisone tries to work She is seriously bloated, the vet drained fluid from her belly and took some blood. Did not see any tumors in the digestive system, but took blood to see what is going on w/the liver, kidneys, etc. Pain killer has not abated her labored breathing like it should have, very concerned that the big "C" may be somewhere in her precious body. All we have on our side is time and hope/prayers. Thanks to all for your good wishes and just for being there. Will let you know. We want what's best for her, even if that means just closing her eyes and joining our other pets, her cat borthers, in Heaven.

Blood tests show Puppy Beaner's kidneys are in failure and there is no hope, only for her to be put to permanent rest tomorrow Oct 9, 2004. Thanks for all of your suggestions, concern and help. You will all forever be in my thoughts and prayers!

Oh dear.....I am so sorry for what you are going through right now.......you will be in my prayers and God bless you for all you've done for her......

She will always be in your heart and in your dreams,
She's never far away, even though that's how it seems.

Memories are forever the bonds that keep her with you,
She is your friend, your angel, you know she'll always be true.

You spent what seemed as though a lifetime together,
Now the journey ends and you face a new stage of stormy weather.

You know she's in heaven, smiling down from above,
You will never forget her, for she is the one you will forever love.

Rest In Peace Puppy........

To all who have been there for Puppy

Thanks you all so much. Even in the end she was thinking of us. Puppy did not want us to suffer through the night as we watched her suffer so she let go at 9:10 PM Friday 10/08. God bless you all and thannks for being there. Love and prayers - Puppy's Family.
