dog vomiting for 3 days - very concerned!!

hi there,

our 6 month old schnauzer mix has been vomiting for 3 days know and we're so worried. he was neutered recently and had a bladder infection just days after for which he was given antibiotics that he finished on monday. since he has been throwing up, mostly in the early hours of the night (between 3 - 7am). it goes back and forth from being brownish (looks like his food) to yellowish to white/clear. he also vomits a few times throughout the day, usually 3 or so times.

we took him to the vet immediately but she didn't seem overly concerned as he had no fever and is otherwise his playful, happy, energetic self. she thought it might be from the antibiotics or something he's eaten in the yard (he's quite the scavenger). she gave him more meds to settle his stomach but they haven't helped. we called her back and she suggested just giving him a lesser dose of the meds.

i looked through past threads about dogs and vomiting and noticed a lot of you suggesting it's a problem with the feeding schedule. we let duffy graze as he's a small dog and not very pigish. actually, he's put himself on a feeding schedule and eats about three times a day with a cookie as a snack (both Medi-Cal puppy food and cookies). his appetite seems fine and if it was a matter of his stomach being empty, he'd let us know. his very good at sending the message when he's ready to eat and there's no food in his bowl.

we don't know what else to do and our next step are some expensive tests. i'd just love a little insight into what this could be before we dish out hundreds of dollars, especially just after spending a few hundred on his neuter, his UTI and the recent visit about this issue.
thanks!

Is your dog still taking his medication? If not, stop food for 12-24 hours and give him some plain white yogurt. (If he won't eat it, you must try to encourage him to eat it) The yogurt will settle his stomach. Then slowly give him some small quanties of his dog food to see if it stays down. If he doesn't through up, increase the quanity of dog food.

I'd be inclined to take him off all meds and see what happens. If the vomiting continues, you might want to look into changing his food, maybe it doesn't agree with him. Has he been dewormed? This would require a stool sample but the test isn't overly expensive.

Is he taking Clavamox? If so, it could be that since it has been known to cause nausea.

Bingo! Clavamox and many other antibiotics prescribed can cause nausea, especially on an empty stomach. Ciara has been on Clavamox now for 5 weeks and she has a mega sensitive stomach because of all the drugs she is on already...so, we added another one, Tagamet. She was on Reglan but that left her drowsy. Ask your vet.

Ciara's nausea is almost non-existing since I started feeding her smaller meals 4 times a day. I always feed 20 to 30 minutes before dosing her meds too.
