Ear mites and treatment--help!
I just adopted a kitten and brought him to the vet today, and he has ear mites! The vet gave him Interceptor and gave me an extra pill to give him in a month's time, but she did not clean his ears out all that well.
He's probably had the mites since he was born as he came from a home with many cats, and the previous owner said she "treated" them two months ago (and he's only two months old!). Is he still highly contagious? I have a five-year-old cat who I'd really rather not get infected with ear mites. My questions are: -Is Interceptor really the best medication for this? If not, what is? -Are there any other additional treatments I should give him? (Including home remedies--perhaps cleaning his ears with peroxide on a cotton ball?) -Is he still contagious if he's had the mites for two months? -What should I look for to see if my adult cat has gotten them? -Are there any ways I can prevent my older cat from getting infected? I should say my adult cat and the kitten are not really on good terms yet so they haven't been snuggling, or really sleeping in the same areas. Thanks in advance for your help! |

I don't have any ear mite or Interceptor experience, but here are a couple of websites with some info:
http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_ear_mites.html http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/em.html As for cleaning your kitten's ears, I've heard good things about Zymox. I wouldn't use peroxide, mostly because it can be irritating to inflamed skin. Hope it all clears up quickly.

kitty to cat introductions
hi...I just adopted a kitten..She is learning her role with our two older cats..slowly...
apart from separate food and litter bowls and toys....I was brushing the kitten and then the cat with socks. on my hands..so they smelt each other plus one does nose the other and both have done bum sniffing but when the kitten puts out her paw to play with the tail of the adult... hiss city happens (and the kitten looks so startled... but chastened.) but it is a warning hiss and I have two pot lids ready to smash...to create a distraction... I got all this information from others on this forum good luck weena, fleur, licorice, lucy I |
