still chewing - running out of ideas!

i first posted here in regards to kiila's owie on her front lower leg: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=67601

i am at a loss of things to try to get her to stop chewing and licking

what i have tried so far:

- antibiotics (she is on round 2 now and doesnt seem to be helping)
- gauze wrap (she just chews it off)
- vet wrap (she slides it down her leg where she has a cyst and seems to cut into the cyst)
- bitter apple (she does not like the taste, but is stubborn and will keep licking at it)
- vitamin e (in case its the itchies that is making her lick/chew)
- apple cider vinegar (cleans it, but doesnt deter her)
- e collar (goes absolutely ballistic with it on - an inflatable one wouldnt cut it as it is on her lower leg and would still be able to access it)

any other tips?

i can prevent her from licking while i am around her, however, while at work, or out, she licks and chews

i have been suggested tea tree oil - however, isnt that toxic to dogs?
what about tobasco sauce - is that safe for dogs?
i have even thought of asking the vet to cast her leg, leaving it open where her boo boo is as it would need air to heal, but perhaps cast with a screen of sorts where her sore is? (and ask them to cast just her foreleg - not on a joint where it would make walking difficult)
i have also been suggested a cage muzzle, however, having never worn one before, i would think it would have the same effect as the cone - and i dont care for the idea of leaving her unattended with one on.

i am on midnights this coming week, so i am HOPING, the chewing/licking will be at a minimum as she would sleep for the most part while i am at work - perhaps giving it a chance to heal....but if that doesnt work, back to the vet we go for other suggestions/solutions!

but i am very interested to hear any other thoughts/comments/suggestions!

Aw, poor Kiila.

Tabasco sauce won't hurt her but I don't know if it would help any. You can use Tea Tree Oil but I think it has to be diluted.

There is an old folks remedy from years ago and that was to use tea bag compresses but I don't know much about it.

Hopefully someone else has some more ideas for you.

I found this info on tea tree oil treatment for hot spots with directions for diluting ....

http://www.ehow.com/how_4732283_hot-...tural-way.html

From http://www.vetinfo.com/dog-hot-spot-treatment.html

Quote:
To use a tea bag as a healing compress, dip the tea bag in hot water. After it cools, place it directly on the hot spot for a few minutes. For best results, repeat this process a few times a day until you see the area starting to dry up and heal.

thanks rainbow - i will give the tea tree oil solution and tea bag a shot!
at this point, i am willing to try anything!
a friend of mine is bringing me one of her little girls mismatched sock to try - maybe easier than the vet wrap as it wont be tight and bother her?

such a stubborn, persistent girl i have!

Have you given any consideration to a food allergy? My SIL's dog near chewed his paw raw and was proned to severe ear infections until she switched his food. He's been pain/infection free for over a year now!

i dont think that it is a food allergy. she had a skin tag in this spot - very thin, loosely attached one. i *think* what happend was as she walked on the snow crust and fell through, she irritated it and scratched it...and has since chewed it off, leaving a wound, which she is incessantly licking at
it is getting a wee bit better with all the things i have tried...just not as quickly as i had hoped (momma is just as stubborn and impatient as kiila is! haha!)

but...it IS worth bringing up with the vet when we go for our follow-up visit

I hear ya Budggrl...it's a hurry up and wait situation.

The food allergy wouldn't hurt to ask the vet on the follow up. Good luck.

Good luck with the sock but it never worked for any of my dogs.

I hope you can find a solution for Kiila soon.

You'll likely need to vetwrap the top of the sock to ensure it stays in place, if the top is high enough above the owie it might not irritate as much not being so closed in & will be good to have atleast a teensy bit of air flow on the wound. I used to use a sock on my Cally when he would excessively wash his foot, he would still wash the sock so be prepared for changing soggy socks

i put the sock on her and its the perfect length - goes from ankle to armpit i think i will tape or vet wrap the top to prevent her from sliding it off...but i am praying something so silly and easy will help!

if she thinks its clothes, rather than for her owie - it might work (she doesnt mind playing dress up and will wear the most ridiculous things if she thinks she is pretty but bandaids are apparently not so pretty to her! haha)

I really hope the sock works for Kiila.

And, of course, you know we want pics.

Looks like a great size she thinks is clothes & not for the owie

Kiila & Aslan both look fabulous in their respective socks

That's too cute.

So is she still keeping the sock on and leaving her owie alone?

well she did manage to take it off last night while i was at work...but i think she left it on most of the night as her owie didnt appear to be licked (was dry and not full of slobber) and the sock was still wet when i found it. but she did keep it on all day while i slept
its also sprouting lil hairs now too

her new bone seems to be occupying her too

Well that's an improvement.

Do you have an old sweatshirt or a t-shirt or something with sleeves that are long enough to cover her owie? She shouldn't be able to get out of that.

ooh! thats a good idea!! unfortunately momma is not so svelte as kiila, but i could always hit the sally ann or value village for a cute pink kids sweatshirt!!
i will definitely keep that in mind if the sockie fails

Actually you may be surprised about how things fit so if you have something it's worth a try to see how it fits on her.

When Chase had his first TPLO surgery and his back end was shaved I wanted something to cover him so he wouldn't get sunburned. Chase is my long legged lab that is very lean and 95 lb .....the only thing that fit him was a t-shirt of hubby's and he is 6 ft tall and 210 lb.

kiila has been known to prance around in momma's clothes before

they dont fall off her, but the arms are rather long on her - she's a dainty lil girl

thanks so much for asking rainbow!

she seems to be leaving alone now for the most part, so it is FINALLY starting to heal and is re-growing hair on it
and after trying so many different kind of foods to hide her pills in, she has finally been outsmarted by raw ground beef and takes them without fail! YAY!

i just hope she leaves it alone now til it heals completely! stubborn lil girl! haha!

For what's its worth, my Buddy had numerous interdigital cysts and it licked so much that he open sores.

I also tried all kinds of things (antibacteria spray, cider vinegar, etc, etc) and what seems to work for him is that I clean his paws with a little cotton pad soaked in saline water (every night) and we put his booties on for the night so he won't lick.

I think they lick because it probably burns/itch/stings and the saline water seems to do it. Also a strange but maybe real coincidence is that when we had his dental work done, the spread of infection seems to have dissipated more.

Good luck
