I've only seen a couple so far too Chico2. I've actually left all the milkweed that came up in the rock garden alone this year so they have lots of places to lay eggs.
Great pic, I hope you see loads more. clm |

Are these an Eastern phenom? I don't think I've seen one since moving West. Used to see them all the time in Montreal. They're so pretty.

We've had them for a couple of weeks now Chico...my purple Phlox is just starting to bloom and they love that stuff, even if it is full of mildew

Well, the only ones I've seen before today, were the Yellow Swallow-Tails and the little white ones.
I would love to get some milk-weed,I have just the spot for them, another ugly cornerbut don't know where to get some I have three Butterfly Bushes and they love those too. Hopefully this one was not just a lost soul, hopefully there'll be more. Vinnie goes crazy when he sees one and I have a heck of a time keeping him from catching one. Once Vinnie caught a beautiful Blue Swallow-tail,he tore it's wings to shreds and the poor thing was still alive, hubby had to kill it. I will not let that happen again:sad:

if you have a wetter corner of the yard, try to get some Swamp Milkweed...the flowers are more delicately pretty, more vibrant colour, and they have a lovely cotton-candy scent! I've heard they do well in regular garden soil too, though...

Chico2 - Monarchs are supposed to taste bad, so isn;t it funny cats still seem to try to catch them? Our leash cat Seuss is always trying to catch the monarchs that come to our milkweed. Even our eat everything puppy won't eat anything that tastes like milkweed.

Well, the cats don't eat them, they destroy them so they cannot fly which is worse, hubby has to kill them.
The same with a mouse, the cats only torture the poor little thing,so we take the mouse away. So if I see a beautiful butterfly i keep the cats away I would love some Milk-Weed,maybe I can get a cutting off 14+,next time I go there for a visit.

I think I've only seen 2 monarchs all summer, chico. Seems like the cool weather is really delaying the summer flights here...
They sure look nice against your flowers!

That is a butterfly I haven't seen in person since I moved up here 27 years ago. I love them!
I remember finding a crsylis at day camp when I was a kid and bringing it home and i was actually lucky to see the butterfly emerge weeks later. I never forgot that site. I was only about 7 years old and I just sat and watched it. Just amazing! Don't monarchs only eat a "certain" type of milkweed? I remember reading something about it when thousands of them died in Mexico a few years back. Debbie
