Food in bed

Hi,
My dog Clark is 11 years old. The other animal in the house is our 3 year old cat Trooper. Mostly they ignore each other. Anyway, Clark recently got his very first proper 'doggie bed' (before this he just layed on the couch or in his kennel). Anyway he does a funny thing with his food- he will take it from the bowl in the kitchen and carry it to his bed. Some of it falls out of his mouth along the way. Also he doesn't normally eat it right away, he just stocks it up in his bed. Why does he do this and what can I do to get him to stop?
