Just asking for some good vibes and fingers crossed for a slew of testicles being removed around here.
Tomorrow is Viggo (weather permitting)
Friday is Orange cat and Elmo
I am far too out numbered around here with testosterone so since there is spare money laying around figured I'd do em all in the same week.

Oh,Oh,a horse a kitty and a pittie,is the same vet doing them all??
I know I am ignorant when it comes to horses,but I did not think horses were neutered to all of them

The horse vet comes out to your farm to do everything as long as it doesnt involve needing a facility ( like if a horse is a crypto here we have to trailer them to Guelph to geld)
Viggo is done, but it was NOT a smooth geld.
He woke up twice, almost stood once, was able to pull in his testicles while completely sedated so she had to fish for them and make a third inscision instead of wasting any more time as he was waking up the third time.
He had convulsions after the first time he woke up and I know the vet was in a bit of panic mode but putting on a straight face while running to get IV and a different shot to give him. Me and my man were both sitting on his head and neck so he wouldnt try to stand or thrash around too much.
It wasnt pretty but he came out of everything good and is now in the field calm as a cucumber and a little on the drugged up side with his buddies and his snazzy new blanket.
Here's hoping Elmo and Orange cat go smoothly Friday

Do you spay mares,or are they kept in tact??
I know zilch about horses,other than,that they are all beautiful

You dont spay a horse, its far too hard on them, I believe it is a standing surgery??? dont quote me on it though.
There is no reason to spay a mare though, most people have either mares or geldings (fixed males) and luckily you dont have stray stallions roaming ripping apart your fencing to get to your mares lol.

Thats right it did, but that was improper fencing on the stud owners part. When you have a stud you should have a much more secure form of fencing, a single strand electric isn't sufficient for a stud let alone 2 living together with no mares.
Lucky for Beauty and I that day she was only just coming into heat and did not stand for them.
Another reason I'm happy that both my boys are geldings now, lots of people ride up and down this road so I wont have to worry about my stud getting out and causing that trauma to anyone else.

Well for anyone who was wondering, testicle removal week went off with out much of a hitch.
I was a bit worried after Viggo's ordeal that it was a bad start but everyone is now resting and not too bothered by the missing bits.

Glad to hear they are all doing well. I, personally, think animals are much happier not having to deal with their hormones, that has been my observation with cats.

I didn't know that about horses, either . I thought they were all fixed like cats and dogs

Male horses almost always are, your average horse person really couldnt properly handle a stud horse and Geldings make the BEST mounts (generally speaking). Mares get "mareish" through out the spring summer and early fall thanks to their hormones

I'm just so happy that all the "alterations" are done now. With spring around the corner I dont have to worry about Orange cat taking off out of the house for the barn cats, and Viggo heading off to the horses down the road when all those mare come into heat

Its terrifying to say the least, I almost was teary eyed when i dropped the two boys off yesterday, I had to go shopping to take my mind off things.
I was told to call around noon to see how things went, I stopped in to see lol

omd, erykah! Viggo's surgery sounds traumatic for all involved! Glad he came through with flying colors!!!

What a relief that the other two boys had uneventful alterations!

So how long does it take a horse to recover from a castration? I've only ever had experience with dogs...

Horses dont take any longer really than dogs or cats, only thing is they are more work as the incisions are not sutured, its left opened (why its not recommended to do in fly season)
Right now he is swolen badly (which is normal) and I have to walk and trot him 3 times a day for about 15-20 minutes to keep the fluid from building up too bad in his sheath.
The first 24 hours you dont want them to move much at all as in a rare case their intestines can make their way down the same path the testicles take to drop out.
So you restrict their movement a bit to allow swelling to close it up.
Today his swelling is nothing more than if he had a slightly dirty irritated sheath in need of cleaning, I have seen some horses swell really bad.
Perhaps for him having 3 incisions and allowing better drainage could be why he isn't swelling quite so bad.

Oh and chico, i just read your little (how about a cuter name for him)... i like Orange cat personally, his name actually on his vet papers is Cheese Croissant ( my pregnant friend had asked me if she could eat the cheese croissant that was on the coffee table when he was a kitten) but now he is Orange cat , we mostly call him OC though.
